Do you want to help us in our mission, creating a safe and secure world together, whilst working on projects that are truly unique?

The Royal Navy rely on our engineering, project management and digital teams to keep their submarines at sea and submariners safe. They Protect our Nation and we help to Protect them.

At Babcock we have a true culture of opportunity – with business contracts that last decades and structured career development pathways that can take you in all kinds of directions; you will grow, develop, and achieve more than you ever thought possible. There has never been a better time for you to join Babcock Submarine Support and play your part in protecting the protectors.

The Role

As a Portfolio Risk Manager, you'll lead the identification, assessment and management of risks across the Advanced Planning Department, supporting a growing portfolio of programmes and projects. Working closely with stakeholders across multiple sites, you'll develop and maintain robust risk frameworks, provide independent insight into potential threats and opportunities, and ensure effective mitigation strategies are embedded throughout project delivery. Your work will directly support better decision-making, stronger governance and successful programme outcomes across the defence sector.

What you’ll do:

  • Managing risk profiles across projects and programmes, ensuring risks are identified, assessed and effectively mitigated.
  • Developing and maintaining departmental risk frameworks covering capability, capacity, training requirements and organisational growth.
  • Gathering, scoring and monitoring risks across multiple work packages, ensuring appropriate controls and mitigation plans are in place.
  • Analysing programme and portfolio risks, identifying trends, dependencies and potential impacts on delivery.
  • Liaising with a wide range of stakeholders to support governance, risk reporting and informed decision-making.

You will work 35 hours per week and can be based at one of our key locations Bristol, Devonport or Clyde. Hybrid working patterns are available with a minimum of two days per week onsite. Travel to other Babcock sites will be expected as business needs require.

What you’ll need:

Essential experience of the Project Risk Manager:

  • Demonstrable experience in risk management within a complex project, programme or operational environment.
  • Proven ability to identify, assess, manage and mitigate risks across projects, programmes or portfolios.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills with experience working across multiple teams and disciplines.
  • Experience maintaining risk registers and producing high-quality risk reporting and analysis.
  • Proven track record of delivering accurate work to agreed timescales and business requirements.

Qualifications for the Project Risk Manager:

  • Hold a recognised risk management qualification, such as Association for Project Management Project Risk Management Level 2, PRINCE2 Risk Management, or an equivalent qualification supported by relevant practical experience.

The successful candidate must be able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) security clearance for this role.
