Power BI Architect - Senior Engineer- 1 Year Position

DMBA (Deseret Mutual Benefit Administrators) is a non-profit organization that administers benefits for companies who are owned or affiliated with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Position Summary

We are seeking a highly experienced, hands-on Power BI Architect / Senior Engineer to help establish and mature an early-stage enterprise Power BI environment. This is a 12-month contract position with the potential for a 12-month extension. The role follows a hybrid work schedule, with the required in- office work on Mondays and Tuesdays.

This role will provide technical leadership across Power BI architecture, administration, configuration, security, development practices, and deployment. The successful candidate will combine strong architectural expertise with hands-on technical delivery, working directly alongside our BI/ETL team to build production solutions while establishing the standards, tools, and practices needed to support Power BI at enterprise scale.

A key objective of this role is knowledge transfer and team enablement. We are not simply looking for someone to build reports. We want an experienced Power BI leader who can help us establish a scalable platform, introduce modern development practices (specifically utilizing AI), and teach our internal team how to independently develop, administer, troubleshoot, and support the environment.

Key Responsibilities

Power BI Architecture & Platform

• Assess the current Power BI environment and recommend improvements to architecture, configuration, administration, and scalability.
• Help establish enterprise standards for Power BI development and administration.
• Design and implement appropriate workspace, application, and content organization strategies.
• Establish security standards, including workspace access, data access, sharing, and row-level security where appropriate.
• Help establish development, testing, deployment, monitoring, and support practices.

Power BI Development & Data Modeling

• Design and build production-quality Power BI reports, dashboards, semantic models, and supporting solutions.
• Develop well-designed semantic models using appropriate dimensional modeling practices.
• Work with SQL-based data sources and collaborate with data engineering and ETL developers.
• Establish reusable patterns and examples that internal developers can follow.

Development Practices & Automation

• Help modernize Power BI development practices through the appropriate use of:
• Version-controlled Power BI development
• Automated deployment and CI/CD practices
• Command-line and scripting tools
• APIs and automation
• Model Context Protocol (MCP) and related tooling where appropriate
• AI-assisted development and troubleshooting
• Repeatable development, testing, review, and deployment processes

Tableau Transition & Evaluation

• Evaluate existing Tableau solutions and identify appropriate candidates for migration or redevelopment in Power BI.
• Help determine when existing functionality should be replicated versus redesigned using Power BI capabilities.
• Provide technical guidance for transitioning reporting and analytics capabilities from Tableau to Power BI.
• Experience supporting organizations with both Tableau and Power BI is highly desirable.

Required Qualifications

• Significant hands-on experience designing, implementing, administering, and supporting enterprise Power BI environments.
• Strong understanding of enterprise BI and data architecture.
• Experience establishing development standards and governance practices.
• Experience troubleshooting complex Power BI platform and development issues.
• Demonstrated ability to operate as both an architect and hands-on developer.
• Strong communication, mentoring, and technical training skills.
