Show job description

Root Communications is a boutique PR agency, founded in New York, that helps technology companies from China and the wider APAC region build their reputation in international markets. Our clients work in AI, automotive, autonomous driving, robotics, logistics and consumer electronics. We handle their international media relations, content, investor relations communications and trade show PR across the US, Europe and Asia-Pacific, and we bring in local partner agencies when a campaign needs to run in another language.

We are looking for an Account Manager to run the day-to-day work on several of our technology accounts. You will be the main contact for your clients, help shape their international media strategy and make sure the work gets delivered. You will work closely with our CEO and the rest of our small, fully remote team.

Location: Remote. We would prefer someone based in APAC, such as mainland China, Hong Kong, Singapore or Malaysia, because most of our clients are in China and you will need to be available during their working hours. There will be occasional travel for client meetings and trade shows.

What you will do

  • Be the day-to-day contact for clients over WeChat, email and calls, and onboard new clients by gathering their company background, key messages, spokesperson details and upcoming news.
  • Turn client announcements into clear PR plans with realistic timelines, and keep track of what each contract covers so we deliver what we promised and raise it early when a request falls outside it.
  • Write and edit press releases, media pitches, Q&A documents, briefing notes and reporter profiles in English, to a standard that Western journalists will take seriously, and help clients adapt their Chinese-language materials so they read naturally in English.
  • Build media lists across US, European and Asia-Pacific outlets, pitch and follow up with journalists, and set up interviews, briefings and press meetings, including at trade shows and product launches.
  • Brief spokespeople before interviews, support earnings and financial communications for our listed clients, and work with our local partner agencies on campaigns in other languages.
  • Track coverage with our media monitoring tools, put together monthly and quarterly client reports, and keep an eye on what clients’ competitors are doing in the media.
  • Spot opportunities to do more for existing clients, help with proposals and credentials for new business, and follow news on funding rounds, IPOs and overseas expansion among Chinese tech companies.

What we are looking for

  • English and Mandarin speaker (this is not a hard requirement but is prefered)
  • At least five years of PR experience, at an agency or in-house, with a record of results.
  • Experience working with technology companies. Knowledge of automotive, robotics, logistics or consumer electronics is a plus.
  • Familiarity with media databases and monitoring tools such as Cision or Brand24, as well as Google Workspace, Slack and AI tools.
  • The ability to handle several clients at once and keep work moving without needing to be chased.
  • Confidence dealing directly with senior client executives, including telling them politely when an idea will not work with the media.
  • Well organized and dependable when working remotely across time zones.

Nice to have

  • Experience handling media at international trade shows or events.
  • Knowledge of financial or investor relations communications for listed companies.
  • Existing relationships with technology, automotive or business journalists in the US or Europe.

What we offer

  • Competitive pay based on experience.
  • Fully remote work with flexible hours, as long as you are available for client calls.
  • Direct experience with well-known Chinese technology companies as they expand overseas.
  • A three-month trial period, followed by an ongoing position.
