Bristol, UK | Hybrid (Tuesday–Thursday onsite)
SPX Radiodetection designs world-leading technology that helps protect critical infrastructure globally. As we continue to develop more integrated, systems-based products, we’re looking for a Principal Mechanical Engineer to bring deep technical expertise and a hands-on approach to product design and development.
This is a hands-on technical role for an experienced mechanical engineer who enjoys solving complex design challenges, developing robust products for electronic applications, and taking ideas from concept through to manufacture. A particular focus is designing plastic components and housings, including injection-moulded parts.
The Role
You’ll play a key role in the mechanical design and development of ruggedised electronic products, taking ownership of complex components and assemblies from early concepts through prototyping, verification and production.
You’ll work closely with electronics, firmware, manufacturing and suppliers to create practical, reliable designs that perform in demanding real-world environments.
Working with manufacturing partners and suppliers, you’ll apply sound engineering judgement and a “right first time” mindset to ensure designs are robust, cost-effective and manufacturable. You’ll contribute technical expertise across new product introduction (NPI) and ongoing product improvements, with an emphasis on hands-on design and problem-solving.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Defining and being responsible of the mechanical architecture of our products in line with the product roadmap.
- Designing mechanical components, enclosures and assemblies for electronic products.
- Developing plastic parts for injection moulding, including design for manufacture, material and tooling considerations.
- Creating detailed 3D models and engineering drawings using SolidWorks.
- Taking designs through concept development, prototyping, testing, validation and production release.
- Applying DFM/DFA principles and working with suppliers to resolve tooling and manufacturing challenges.
- Collaborating closely with electronics and other engineering disciplines to integrate mechanical and electronic systems.
- Investigating design or production issues, identifying root causes and implementing practical improvements.
- Supporting new product introduction and sustaining engineering, including design changes and product lifecycle improvements.
What We’re Looking For
- Extensive experience designing and developing mechanical components and assemblies for complex products.
- Strong experience with injection-moulded plastic components, ideally housings or enclosures for electronic products.
- Expert SolidWorks capability, including detailed modelling and engineering drawings.
- Good understanding of DFM, tooling, materials and manufacturing processes, with the ability to work directly with suppliers.
- Experience taking products from concept through prototyping and testing into volume manufacture.
- A practical, hands-on approach to design, troubleshooting and technical problem-solving.
- Ability to make sound engineering decisions and provide technical guidance to colleagues without needing a formal people-management remit.
- Strong attention to detail and a commitment to product quality, reliability and continuous improvement.
Experience in electronics, industrial equipment, instrumentation, automotive, aerospace, utilities or ruggedised products would be beneficial.
Why Join SPX Radiodetection?
- Work on market-leading technology with global impact.
- Help develop innovative electronic products used in demanding real-world environments.
- Take technical ownership of challenging mechanical design projects.
- Work collaboratively with experienced engineers across mechanical, electronics, firmware and manufacturing.
- Hybrid working environment with onsite collaboration Tuesday–Thursday.
If you enjoy hands-on mechanical design, solving challenging engineering problems and turning well-engineered concepts into reliable products, we’d love to hear from you.
