Careers that change lives start here. Medtronic is a global leader in healthcare technology with a Mission to alleviate pain, restore health, and extend life. Our 95,000 employees work across more than 150 countries to put patients first — developing innovative medical technologies that improve the lives of 72+ million patients each year. Your unique talents will help shape the future of healthcare while building a career grounded in purpose, growth, and impact.

A Day in the Life

Making the best possible surgery accessible to every patient. We believe the future of surgery is less invasive and more precise, predictable, and personalized.

We bring together sharp surgical expertise, extensive medical knowledge, and cutting edge technology with a single-minded focus on each patient — wherever they are, and however they need to be treated

Each surgical specialty faces unique challenges, yet the goal is universal: better care for patients. By understanding these differences, we deliver solutions that empower surgeons and keep patients at the heart of every decision.

We are seeking a Principal Mechanical Engineer - Manufacturing Process to provide technical leadership for the development, characterization, validation and production readiness of manufacturing and assembly processes for complex precision electromechanical products.

This role will own the manufacturing-process solution, establishing the link between product design, component variation, assembly methods, process parameters and functional product performance. The role will develop, characterize and mature processes in the engineering lab and pilot-line environment, then lead their transfer, validation and stabilization within Manufacturing.

The role will be based at the Mervue Campus in Galway, Ireland.
Come for a job, stay for a career!
  • Own manufacturing and assembly process development across multiple related product lines, from early lab development and pilot-line builds through validated Manufacturing release and ramp-up.
  • Develop a deep understanding of product design, critical characteristics, tolerance chains, component variation, interfaces and product-process interactions.
  • Translate product requirements and design intent into robust process flows, assembly concepts, operating windows, acceptance criteria and control strategies.
  • Lead lab and pilot-line builds, DOE, process characterization, optimization, capability studies and structured technical investigations.
  • Establish and maintain process risk and control documentation, including process flows, PFMEA, control plans, work instructions and supporting engineering evidence.
  • Lead process verification and validation, including appropriate IQ/OQ/PQ activities, and demonstrate that processes consistently meet quality and performance requirements.
  • Partner with Advanced Manufacturing Engineering to establish the pilot line and define equipment, tooling, fixtures, automation, inspection and manufacturing-cell integration requirements.
  • Lead process transfer into Manufacturing, including validation, training, documentation, issue resolution, production ramp-up and process stabilization.

Key Skills & Experience

  • Strong understanding of mechanical design, GD&T, tolerance analysis, component variation, assembly methods and product-process interactions.
  • Strong working knowledge of DOE, process characterization, capability analysis, PFMEA, SPC, MSA, process validation and structured root-cause analysis.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate engineering evidence into practical process controls, operating limits and production documentation.
  • Experience improving manufacturing performance through yield, capability, cycle-time, repeatability, scrap and process-stability improvements.
  • Experience leading complex technical workstreams across Product Design, Quality, Operations, suppliers and equipment-development teams.
  • Experience with precision mechanisms such as motors, geartrains, bearings, brakes, encoders, adhesives or controlled assembly is desirable; medical-device experience is advantageous
