Description

About the role

At Trintech, the Principal Platform Engineer is a senior, hands-on technical leader who provides architecture and technical oversight for major platform initiatives. You will define scalable Azure platform patterns, implement and operate critical AKS and cloud capabilities, and resolve complex problems that cross infrastructure, application, security and delivery domains.

You will influence multiple teams through practical engineering, clear standards, technical guidance and mentoring, while remaining closely connected to implementation and production operations.

Your impact

• Shape the architecture, engineering patterns and operational readiness of major Azure, AKS and automation initiatives used by multiple teams.

• Provide hands-on technical leadership for complex implementation and production challenges that span infrastructure, application, security and delivery domains.

• Raise engineering quality through reusable standards, deep technical reviews, mentoring and clear guidance that teams can apply independently.

What you will do

• Provide architecture and technical oversight for major Azure environments and platform initiatives supporting Kubernetes and web application deployment.

• Design, implement and maintain Azure platform capabilities such as AKS, Container Registry, Key Vault, managed identities, service principals, app registrations and appropriate PaaS services.

• Act as a principal hands-on engineer for complex implementation, configuration, automation, lifecycle and operational work across Azure cloud services.

• Define and evolve Kubernetes and AKS patterns for cluster deployment, workload configuration, maintenance, scaling, resilience, recovery and operational readiness.

• Establish reusable Terraform patterns and modules that create secure, repeatable and supportable cloud environments.

• Shape CI/CD, GitOps and release-management patterns using Azure DevOps and related automation, including testing, evidence, approval and rollback controls.

• Set technical standards for container images, runtime configuration, platform lifecycle and application-hosting integration across multiple teams.

• Lead design discussions with cloud, application, security, networking and infrastructure teams and turn competing concerns into clear technical direction.

• Resolve complex issues spanning cloud resources, Kubernetes, networking, DNS, identity, secrets, pipelines, storage and application deployment.

• Evaluate Azure PaaS and platform-service options and recommend choices that improve scalability, reliability, maintainability and operational efficiency.

• Define observability, alerting, operational reporting, runbook and production-readiness expectations for major platform capabilities.

• Ensure consequential production changes are tested, documented and aligned with security, compliance, change and recovery requirements.

• Anticipate technical risk, remove complex implementation blockers and escalate unresolved business or enterprise-architecture decisions in time to protect delivery and stability.

• Mentor engineers and raise the engineering bar through architecture guidance, deep reviews, troubleshooting leadership and durable documentation.

What you will bring

• Broad, progressive experience in platform engineering, cloud operations, infrastructure, DevOps, systems engineering or a related field, gained through employment or equivalent practical work.

• Extensive hands-on experience with Microsoft Azure services and public-cloud operating models.

• Strong AKS and Kubernetes depth across architecture, deployment, workload operation, maintenance, scaling, resilience and troubleshooting.

• Advanced container-platform knowledge, including image management, runtime configuration, lifecycle activity and production support.

• Strong Terraform and infrastructure-as-code capability, including reusable patterns, secure lifecycle management and governance through code.

• Experience designing and improving CI/CD practices in Azure DevOps or comparable platforms, including automated deployment and release orchestration.

• Hands-on knowledge of cloud identity and secrets patterns, container registries and relevant Azure platform services.

• Strong fundamentals across networking, DNS, directory and identity services, compute, storage, firewalls and load balancing.

• Advanced cross-domain troubleshooting skills and the ability to remain effective during high-impact production or delivery problems.

• Ability to produce clear standards, runbooks, diagrams and implementation guidance and to communicate architecture, status, risk and recommendations to varied audiences.

• A demonstrated ability to work independently, lead complex technical initiatives, mentor engineers and influence direction across teams.

Nice to have

• Typically 8-12 years of relevant experience in platform engineering, cloud infrastructure, DevOps or systems engineering.

• Experience supporting customer-facing SaaS, hosted or other business-critical production applications.

• Depth in monitoring, metrics, observability, alerting and operational-health reporting for cloud platforms.

• Experience with cloud security, governance, policy, cost management, reliability engineering or disaster recovery.

• Experience coordinating technical work and influencing decisions across organisational boundaries.

How you will work and lead

• Provide technical direction and architecture guidance across multiple teams and lead the most difficult implementation and operational decisions.

• Mentor senior and developing engineers, create reusable guidance and strengthen design and troubleshooting practices across the group.

• Influence application, security and infrastructure partners through evidence, technical credibility and clear communication.

• Set design decisions, technical patterns and implementation guardrails for major platform initiatives within agreed enterprise direction.

• Exercise independent judgement across several technical domains and approve justified implementation exceptions within the initiative or platform area.

• Make recommendations that materially influence team roadmaps, production readiness and technical investment, supported by evidence and explicit trade-offs.

• Bring organisation-wide architecture, major programme priorities and enterprise-risk decisions to the appropriate governance and leadership forums.

What success looks like

• Major platform initiatives are technically coherent, secure, operable and ready for production use.

• Azure and AKS patterns are reusable across teams and produce more consistent delivery, reliability and support outcomes.

• Complex cross-domain problems are resolved with durable fixes and clearer ownership or standards.

• Technical risk is identified early enough to change a design or delivery approach before customer impact.

• Engineers and partner teams make better decisions because architecture guidance and platform documentation are clear and credible.

• The role remains visibly hands-on while its influence extends beyond any single service or team.
