Overview
As Principal Software Developer, you'll set technical direction for PowerPlan's mission-critical tax, accounting, and workflow platform, not just build within it. You'll move fluidly between hands-on development across .NET, Angular, and Azure and higher-altitude architecture conversations with SMEs and leadership, becoming a trusted technical authority across more than one domain of the platform.
We're in the middle of one of the most significant transformations in our history. Decades of proven functionality are being reimagined on a modern SaaS foundation, while AI becomes central to how we build, deliver, and evolve our products. The next generation of the PowerPlan platform is being designed right now. Join us, and you'll have the opportunity to influence the technology, engineering practices, and capabilities that will shape it for years to come.
You'll also build a deliberate mentoring practice that raises the skill level of the developers around you. PowerPlan builds enterprise-grade software for energy industry organizations, where accuracy, reliability, and scalability are not optional, and we give experienced developers real room to grow into technical leadership in a high-trust, high-accountability engineering culture.
Responsibilities
Success will be measured by how quickly you become a credible technical voice, how reliably you deliver scalable production-ready work, and whether the people around you grow stronger because you're on the team.
- Within your first 30 days (up to 45 if the codebase proves unusually complex), embed with architects and subject matter experts, gain full command of the .NET, Angular, and Azure architecture, workflows, and data flows, and flag at least one real architectural or scalability risk in an existing design.
- By month three, lead a design or architecture review for a real feature or system area, present a scalable approach across .NET, Angular, and Azure, and get SMEs and leadership aligned behind it — then keep growing into the technical voice leadership turns to across more than one domain, so the hardest calls never hinge on a single person.
- Design, build, and maintain production-ready features across .NET/C#, Angular/TypeScript, and Azure on an ongoing basis, sustaining consistent delivery with a low defect escape rate and strengthening scalability, maintainability, and performance before technical debt piles up.
- Starting after month six, once you're fully grounded in the architecture and the team, build a consistent mentoring presence through regular pairing and substantive code review that raises the skill level of the developers around you.
- Surface risks and blockers early, before they show up late in a sprint or release, and engage in healthy technical debate with peers and leadership — then drive every disagreement to a clear decision.
Qualifications
- Deep expertise in modern .NET (C#, ASP.NET Core), including async/await patterns, performance optimization, and API design.
- Strong front-end engineering skills using TypeScript, Angular, and modern state management patterns.
- Hands-on experience designing relational schemas and optimizing SQL queries in an Azure SQL or SQL Server environment.
- Experience operating cloud-hosted systems on Azure, with a working understanding of scalability, resiliency, and cost/performance tradeoffs.
- A demonstrated ability to lead architecture or design discussions and get SMEs and leadership aligned behind a technical direction, across more than one domain.
- A track record of mentoring other developers through pairing and substantive code review.
- A willingness to surface risks and blockers early and engage in direct technical debate, while still driving disagreement to a clear decision.
