About North Cloud
The public cloud is rapidly evolving, with businesses investing over $200 billion annually in cloud technology. As AI accelerates demand for scalable infrastructure, cloud costs are soaring, and most teams still rely on spreadsheets to manage them.
At North, we’re building the next-generation cloud, AI, and data spend management platform. We give companies real-time visibility, control, and automation over their digital asset finances so they can grow efficiently without wasting time or money.
Backed by top-tier investors and trusted by companies managing complex cloud environments, North is building the financial operating system for the public cloud.
About the role
North's frontend is how customers understand and act on their cloud, AI, and data spend: dashboards, allocation, commitment recommendations, and Noros, our AI agent, across the app and in Slack. As our first Principal Software Engineer focused on frontend, you'll set the direction for how North looks, feels, and works, and you'll do it by building alongside the teams who ship it.
You'll work closely with our Product Designer and the Experience team on the design system and frontend frameworks every other team builds on. Your job is to make the right way to build frontend the easy way, so any engineer at North can ship changes that are consistent, fast, and well tested, and it's hard to ship ones that aren't.
What you'll do
- Set the technical direction for North's frontend architecture, and write down where we're going and why.
- Build and evolve the design system and component library with our Product Designer, and roll it out across the app.
- Raise the bar on performance, accessibility, and interaction quality, down to the details of how the app feels to use.
- Establish frontend patterns, testing practices, and review standards, and get them into the tools engineers and coding agents use.
- Turn recurring frontend questions, review comments, and inconsistencies into design system and framework improvements that reach existing screens, not just new ones.
- Partner with product teams on new features so they land well for customers and fit the system.
- Help shape how Noros shows up across the app as a consistent part of the experience.
- Coach engineers through code review, design review, and pairing.
What We're Looking For
- 10+ years building production web applications, with deep expertise in modern frontend architecture.
- A track record of setting frontend direction across multiple teams, not just one codebase.
- Experience building and scaling a design system with designers, from components to adoption, and treating it as a product for the engineers who use it.
- Strong judgment about performance, state management, and data-heavy interfaces such as charts, tables, and filters.
- You still write a lot of code, and you lead by shipping with teams rather than handing down standards.
- Clear writing and communication, including explaining tradeoffs to people outside engineering.
- Pragmatic, informed use of AI coding tools, with the judgment to know when they help and when they don't.
- Low ego and a habit of bringing people along.
Nice to Have
- Experience with financial, analytics, or data visualization products.
- Experience building conversational or AI-driven interfaces.
- Familiarity with FinOps or cloud billing concepts.
- Experience at a growing startup where the frontend outgrew its first architecture
