About Us
Gather AI is the Physical AI platform for logistics. We give the companies that run the world’s warehouses ground truth on every product and every movement, dock to dock.
Our platform reads the warehouse floor through autonomous drones and cameras mounted on material handling equipment, then turns what it sees into intelligence and action. Facilities run safer and more accurately, with fewer ladders and fewer manual counts. If you want to do the defining design work for a new category in a vital industry, we’d like to meet you.
About the Team
Product at Gather AI sits at an unusual intersection: we build software for people who work on warehouse floors, not at desks. Our users are associates checking inventory on a tablet from the seat of a forklift, shift teams running drone workflows, field technicians troubleshooting on site, and facility leaders reading AI-generated insights in Sage.
Design here is about more than pixels, though craft matters a lot. It starts with understanding how people work under pressure, and it ends with software that gets out of their way and looks as advanced as the technology behind it.
About the Role
Most design roles ask you to improve something that already exists. This one asks you to define what good looks like for a new category of product.
You’ll be Gather AI’s first and only designer. You’ll own design end to end, from field research and information architecture to visual craft and working prototypes. Your work spans the apps floor teams use alongside our drones and MHE Vision systems, and Sage, our AI insights layer. The job is to help the product team ship products that solve real problems and happen to be very well designed, not to make screens for their own sake.
You won’t design from assumptions. You’ll stand next to the people using our software and let what you see shape what you build.
We’d love you near our Pittsburgh office, and we’ll seriously consider strong candidates anywhere in the US. The role includes about 20% travel, roughly one trip a month, to customer sites in Houston and Dallas and to our Pittsburgh office.
There’s no established design team to slot into, and that’s the point. You’ll set the standard and build the foundations, with a visible path to Director of UX as design at Gather AI grows.
What You’ll Do
  • Own design for the MHEV app: ramp fast and propose a v2 concept by month 3, then take full ownership of the product line
  • Design interfaces for people working directly with drones and forklifts: tablet experiences used mid-shift, in noisy environments and under time pressure, where clarity is the whole job
  • Expand into the Sage dashboard as your second product line, shaping an AI insights product that’s early enough for your decisions to define its direction
  • Build on the foundations of the Gather design system and own it across our dashboards and apps
  • Travel to customer sites to observe how people use our products in the field, and bring that context into every design decision
  • Partner closely with mobile and front-end engineering in Pittsburgh and Noida, from MHEV stand-ups and weekly requirements planning through handoffs that remove ambiguity rather than create it
  • Use Claude and other AI tools to move from concept to functioning prototype, and design with an eye to how engineers will use your work with AI to build front ends faster. The team moves fast and expects you to as well
  • Over time, extend your work to internal tools and the occasional piece of marketing material
What You’ll Need
  • Visual craft: a portfolio with strong, simple, modern design that holds up even in data-dense interfaces. We look closely at typography and layout
  • Analytical rigor: you turn data and requirements into clear information hierarchy, and you can show how you knew a design worked, through measures like task time, error rates or training time
  • Experience shipping real products at scale, with users in real workflows, where we can see the thinking behind the screens
  • A desire to be the only designer: you want to own design end to end now, without a larger design team around you
  • Comfort using Claude or other AI tools to build working prototypes, not just static Figma designs
  • Experience designing through user research: you’ve watched people work and changed what you built because of it
  • Figma fluency, or deep experience with a comparable design and prototyping tool
  • The ability to work without a lot of structure: spot what needs designing before you’re asked, and ask good questions when you’re stuck
  • Willingness to travel about 20% of the time (roughly one trip a month) to customer warehouses and our Pittsburgh office
Nice to Have
  • Experience designing interfaces for physical systems such as robotics, drones, industrial machinery or other non-desk environments
  • Founding or sole designer experience, ideally building 0-to-1 at a startup
  • A blend of consumer-grade polish and enterprise analytical depth
  • Experience building or maintaining a design system
  • Background in warehouse, logistics or fulfillment
  • 5 to 10 years of product or UX design experience. Strong candidates with less tenure who have shipped real products at scale are encouraged to apply
  • Experience with generative UI tools beyond Claude, or a software development background
