Product Designer
Location: Hybrid, 2 days in office
Why this role? Why now?
Citation Group helps over 120,000 SMEs across the UK, Australia and Canada take care of the non-negotiables of running a business: HR and employment law, health & safety, ISO certification, background screening, cybersecurity, e-learning and more. Our mission is simple: build better businesses to create a better world.
We’re changing how we build products, not just what we build. Small, high-leverage teams, combining a product manager with engineers using agentic coding tools and shared design and quality/evals resource. They ship AI-native products and experiences faster, and to a higher bar, than the traditional model allows.
This is the frontier of Citation’s product organisation: fewer layers, more building, and AI woven into both the products we ship and how we ship them. We are looking for people who will embrace this, and help shape how Product works at Citation.
What you'll be doing
Own the user experience
You’ll work through domain ambiguity, partnering with product and engineering to frame both the problem space and the solution space.
Lead product discovery, information architecture and detailed interaction design for ambiguous, information-dense initiatives.
Work alongside product management and engineering teams’ day to day, using prototyping and agentic tooling to test ideas quickly and unblock the team.
Design AI-native products, not features with AI bolted on
Turn complexity into simple defaults. Decide what the system should absorb, what stays hidden until the user asks, and how to do it without removing a capability to make something look simpler.
Design agentic experiences that anticipate and act on a client’s behalf, rather than simply presenting information for a human to act on.
Design for trust: how the system shows its reasoning, what the user can check and override, and what happens when the model gets it wrong.
Design resilient experiences for demanding real-world conditions, such as on-site mobile use, interrupted sessions, varied digital confidence and high-consequence failure modes.
Discover and validate with real clients
Unpack complex HR and H&S workflows by working directly with specialists, including Citation advisers, subject matter experts and customers.
Validate hypotheses early through prototyping, usability testing and discovery tools.
Treat any task that needs documentation to be understood as a design problem to solve.
Tap usage data, client feedback and evals results alongside qualitative research to decide what to design next.
Work across Design, Product and Engineering
You’ll partner on our design system team to evolve a shared component architecture, so every product and touchpoint shares the same patterns, language and behaviour
Challenge scope, articulate trade-offs and build trust with senior engineering and product peers.
Bring back what you learn about designing in an agentic, AI-native way of working to the wider Design and Product teams.
You’ll set the standard for our core design principles. If a user needs documentation to understand something, the design hasn’t done its job, so the design should explain itself.
What we're looking for
A designer of complex products. A demonstrated track record designing multi-sided B2B software, regulated or compliance workflows, or data-intensive enterprise platforms.
Mastery of Figma, information architecture and scalable component systems.
Strong discovery skills. Proven capability in qualitative discovery, contextual inquiry and making sense of unstructured requirements.
Technical fluency. Comfortable with modern web architecture, API states, asynchronous data flows and performance constraints.
Good judgement. You know when to reuse an existing pattern and when a genuinely new one is justified.
AI literacy. A clear view on where AI helps and where it doesn’t. You use AI well in your own design work, help the team do the same, and can design AI-powered experiences that earn user trust.
Comfortable with ambiguity. AI-native product development doesn’t have a settled playbook yet, and you’re happy defining the approach as you go.
What's in it for you
The chance to shape products from the ground up.
A hands-on role at the leading edge of how AI is reshaping product development and design.
Visibility across Design, Product and Engineering leadership, with real ownership of what you ship.
A supportive culture that prizes action, innovation and getting great things done, for our clients and each other.
