Product Engineer / Product Development Engineer - Breville
Location: Manchester area (Cheadle)
Reports to: Senior Engineer Leader, Technical Product Dev. (R&D)
Contract type: Permanent
Your Role & Team in a Nutshell
As a Product Engineer, you will turn new small household appliance ideas into products that are ready for launch under the Breville brand as well as other global brands in other countries. You'll lead the engineering side of new product development projects, making sure products meet expectations for performance, quality and cost. Working closely with colleagues across Programme Management, Marketing, Industrial Design, Manufacturing, Quality, Regulatory and Supply Chain, you'll solve technical challenges and help bring innovative products to market. You'll take ownership of your work, use the latest engineering and AI-enabled tools, and play an important role in delivering successful launches. You will be part of the R&D team of seven and work in a hybrid working model.
We will help you achieve your goals and develop by providing regular feedback and access to online training courses.
Your Key Responsibilities:
- Develop innovative products that meet customer needs, financial goals, and industry and regulatory requirements. Translate customer insights and product use feedback into clear technical specifications.
- Lead multiple new product development (NPD) projects through Newell's Stage-Gate process. Define engineering timelines, achieve key milestones, and deliver products on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards.
- Create engineering product specifications and lead the development of Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (DFMEA) documentation, Design Verification Plans and Reports (DVP&R), and quality specifications.
- Develop test plans and work with internal and external laboratories to validate designs against requirements. Review manufacturing trial results, test data, and Production Part Approval Process (PPAP) documentation, and lead design, tooling, or process improvements based on findings.
- Prepare and review Engineering Change Notices (ENCs). Lead design and technical reviews, and review CAD design models and drawings with cross-functional teams.
- Create basic CAD design models, using AI-assisted design tools where appropriate, to develop early prototypes and quickly evaluate new ideas.
- Conduct intellectual property (IP) searches and work with legal teams on IP clearance and patent applications.
- Analyse competitor products and identify opportunities for innovation, product improvement, and cost reduction.
- Work closely with teams across the business to assess product safety, manufacturability, and reliability. Drive product and process improvements, from small enhancements to large-scale cost-saving initiatives.
- Investigate product complaints and provide technical support to resolve issues. Apply knowledge of materials and manufacturing processes, including injection moulding, to support product design and material selection.
What You’ll Need
Minimum:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Plastics, Mechatronics Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
- Demonstrated experience in a product development, manufacturing, or engineering environment.
- Practical experience with prototyping, design validation, testing, and engineering problem-solving.
- Working knowledge of 3D CAD software, preferably SolidWorks or Creo, including the ability to review 3D models and 2D engineering drawings.
- Strong project management and organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and support projects through a structured stage-gate development process.
Your advantage:
- Strong understanding of, or the ability to quickly learn, manufacturing processes used in small household appliances.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the confidence to collaborate across functions and influence stakeholders.
- Experience developing consumer products and bringing new products from concept through to launch.
- Familiarity with electro-mechanical products and technologies.
- Exposure to AI-assisted or generative design, simulation, prototyping tools, or using AI-generated code to support concept development and testing.
