We are seeking an experienced Project Manager / Environmental Engineer to play a pivotal role in our growing environmental consulting practice in NYC. We are prioritizing candidates with a Professional Engineer (PE) license who bring deep technical authority, client-facing leadership, and a proven track record of managing complex environmental consulting and engineering projects.

In this role, you will take ownership of high-profile projects in the NYC metropolitan area, direct field and office engineering efforts (including Phase I/II Site Assessments, remediation designs, and Remedial Action Workplans), provide oversight of quality control and quality assurance reviews of environmental and hazardous materials deliverables, and mentor junior-to-mid-level engineering and scientific staff. This position offers significant autonomy, path-to-leadership advancement, and direct involvement in key client and regulatory relationships.

  • Salary Range: Starts at $90,000+ (commensurate with experience and PE licensure, if applicable)
  • Benefits & Culture: True Environmental offers comprehensive benefits focused on holistic employee well-being, including health insurance, 401(k) with company match, and generous PTO. They prioritize work-life balance through flexible options and foster professional growth via tuition reimbursement and continuous learning in a supportive culture.

What You'll Do

  • Lead and manage end-to-end site investigation and remediation projects—from initial scoping and proposal preparation to workplan design, engineering controls, field oversight, and final regulatory approval.
  • Direct site characterizations and environmental investigations to determine the nature and extent of contamination across soil, soil vapor, sediment, groundwater, and air for public, private, commercial, industrial, and infrastructure clients.
  • Oversee the preparation of Phase I ESAs (ASTM E1527), Phase II Investigations, Remedial Action Workplans (RAWPs), and complex engineering reports; perform critical peer reviews and engineering sign-offs.
  • Direct field programs and oversee specialty subcontractors (drillers, remediation contractors) during soil boring advancement, monitoring well installation, excavation, and remedial system construction.
  • Manage, mentor, and train junior-to-mid-level engineers and scientists; ensure deliverables meet high technical standards while maintaining project budgets, timelines, and profitability.
  • Serve as the primary technical point of contact in project meetings with clients, municipal stakeholders, and regulatory agencies (NYSDEC, NYCDEP, OER).

Minimum Requirements

  • BS or MS in Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering with an environmental concentration, Geology, or a closely related discipline.
  • 8-10+ years of progressive environmental engineering and consulting experience, with demonstrated project management and team leadership skills.
  • Hands-on experience executing Phase I ESAs and Phase II Site Investigations, including soil, sediment, soil vapor, air, and groundwater sampling.
  • Working knowledge of NYSDEC/NYSDOH Rules, Regulations, and Guidance documents (DER-10, Part 360, Part 375, Vapor Intrusion Technical Guidance) and Chapter 12 (Hazardous Materials) of the New York City Environmental Quality Review Technical Manual.
  • OSHA 40-Hour HAZWOPER certification with current 8-hour refresher.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean record and willingness to conduct field oversight across the five boroughs of NYC, Westchester, and Long Island.
  • Exceptional technical writing, analytical, quantitative problem-solving, and project financial management skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, Outlook).
  • Ability to wear a respirator, pass a pre-employment drug screening, and comply with DOT-regulated random drug testing programs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license (NYS PE registration or ability to obtain via reciprocity is a major asset).
  • Advanced experience designing and executing complex remedial solutions and engineered controls across various environmental media.
  • Working knowledge of environmental investigation implications with the CEQR process (Chapter 12) and NYC Brownfield Cleanup Program (BCP) / OER projects.
  • OSHA 10-Hour or 30-Hour Construction Safety certification.
  • GIS (Geographic Information Systems) competency.
All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability or protected veteran status.
