About The Company

Compass Group UK & Ireland Ltd serves millions of meals across business, education, healthcare, sport and defence. Through its services and operations, the organisation supports a wide range of people and communities throughout the UK and Ireland. Digital technology plays an important role in helping the business deliver reliable, effective services at scale.

Compass Group UK & Ireland is building a modern, in-house quality engineering capability within its Digital & Technology function. This is an opportunity to help establish the standards, practices and technical foundations that will support the development of dependable digital products across the organisation.

About The Role

As Lead QA Engineer, you will shape and lead the organisation’s approach to quality engineering. This is a senior, hands-on position combining strategic direction with practical technical contribution. You will guide the move towards automation-first testing and help embed quality throughout the product lifecycle, from early requirements and design through development, release and ongoing operations.

Working across multiple product squads, you will provide technical leadership to QA Engineers and collaborate closely with Product, Software Engineering, Platform Engineering, Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) and Service Operations. You will help teams build products that are reliable, scalable and ready for release, while promoting shared ownership of quality.

This permanent, hybrid role is based in Parklands, Birmingham, and offers a competitive salary and benefits package.

Qualifications

You will bring significant experience in software testing, test automation and quality engineering, with a track record of leading QA in agile, product-led or DevOps environments. You should have strong knowledge of automation frameworks, API testing and end-to-end testing, as well as experience integrating automated checks into CI/CD pipelines.

You will be able to define test strategies for complex products or platforms, lead defect investigations and use evidence to improve quality outcomes. Strong technical leadership, coaching and stakeholder management skills are essential. You should be comfortable setting strategic direction while remaining engaged in hands-on engineering work.

Experience in one or more non-functional testing areas, such as performance, resilience, security or accessibility, would be advantageous. An interest in evaluating AI-assisted testing tools and emerging quality practices will also be valuable.

Responsibilities

You will define and deliver the quality engineering strategy and roadmap, establishing practical standards that can be adopted across product squads. You will lead the design and development of scalable test automation frameworks and encourage consistent, maintainable approaches to testing.

In partnership with engineering teams, you will embed automated quality gates into CI/CD pipelines and establish risk-based approaches to functional and non-functional testing. You will challenge requirements, designs and acceptance criteria to identify potential issues early, helping teams address risk before it becomes a delivery or production concern.

You will oversee release assurance and production-readiness evidence, lead complex defect investigations and root cause analysis, and use quality metrics and defect trends to identify opportunities for improvement. You will coach QA Engineers, strengthen the quality engineering community and assess emerging tools and practices, including AI-assisted testing, for their potential to improve delivery.

Benefits

You will join the quality engineering capability at an important stage of its development, with the opportunity to establish modern standards and influence how digital products are built. Your work will contribute to measurable improvements across a large, diverse organisation. The role offers a competitive salary and benefits package, alongside a hybrid working pattern based in Parklands, Birmingham.

Equal Opportunity

Compass Group UK & Ireland Ltd is committed to providing a fair and inclusive recruitment process. We welcome applications from people with a range of backgrounds, experiences and perspectives, and assess candidates based on their skills, experience and suitability for the role.
