Blackwave GmbH is a pioneering aerospace company dedicated to designing, manufacturing, and delivering flight-qualified, commercial off-the-shelf composite overwrapped pressure vessels (COPVs) for launch vehicles and satellites. Established in 2016 and headquartered in Munich, Germany, Blackwave has quickly become a leader in providing standardized, flight-ready COPVs with proven heritage. Our innovative approach significantly reduces lead times from months to days while maintaining rigorous quality standards, ensuring each tank is qualified and ready for space missions. With a team of over 150 professionals across manufacturing facilities in Germany and Texas, Blackwave is committed to advancing spaceflight safety and reliability. Our mission is to eliminate COPV failures in spaceflight, contributing to safer and more reliable space exploration and satellite deployment.

About The Role

We are seeking a dedicated Quality Engineer (m/w/d) to join our aerospace team at Blackwave GmbH. In this role, you will be instrumental in ensuring the highest quality standards for our hardware components, specifically focusing on COPVs used in critical space applications. Your primary responsibility will be to develop, implement, and oversee quality assurance processes throughout the entire product lifecycle, from supplier engagement and development phases to serial production. You will work closely with manufacturing teams on the shop floor to ensure quality requirements are consistently met, support change control activities, and conduct root cause analysis to resolve quality deviations effectively. Your efforts will directly impact the reliability and safety of our products, helping us achieve our mission to end COPV failures in spaceflight.

Qualifications

  • A completed degree in engineering, quality management, production technology, or a comparable field.
  • Relevant professional experience in quality planning, risk management, and manufacturing environments.
  • Strong analytical skills with expertise in root cause analysis tools such as 8D, 5-Why, and Ishikawa diagrams.
  • Knowledge of applicable quality standards, including ISO9001, and practical experience in their implementation.
  • Ability to work independently, think solution-oriented, and derive insights from quality data.
  • Excellent communication skills in English, both written and spoken; proficiency in German is a plus for cross-departmental collaboration.
  • Strong attention to detail, reliability, and a commitment to continuous improvement.

Responsibilities

  • Define and implement comprehensive project and process quality assurance strategies across the entire product lifecycle, ensuring compliance from suppliers through to serial production.
  • Support manufacturing processes on the shop floor by working closely with production teams to verify that quality standards are effectively integrated at all stages.
  • Manage change control activities by evaluating product and process modifications, ensuring quality requirements are considered, and supporting approval and implementation procedures.
  • Conduct root cause analysis for quality deviations using structured methods, derive sustainable corrective actions, and oversee their implementation to prevent recurrence.
  • Monitor key quality indicators such as audit findings and non-conformities, and proactively drive continuous process improvements and standardization efforts.
  • Participate in internal and external audits, ensuring compliance with industry standards and company policies.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to foster a culture of quality, safety, and continuous learning within the organization.

Benefits

  • Opportunity for personal responsibility and creative freedom in developing and optimizing production technologies.
  • Flexible working hours and options for remote work to support a healthy work-life balance.
  • Experience in a dynamic environment where start-up spirit meets aerospace innovation, characterized by flat hierarchies and short decision-making processes.
  • Access to various benefits, including a Germany ticket, Egym-Wellpass, or a tax-free benefit in kind via the Give Card.
  • Shared daily lunch with healthy and diverse meal options to foster team bonding and wellness.
  • Relaxation spaces such as a roof terrace with scenic views for unwinding after work.
  • Continuous professional and personal development through engaging projects and expert exchanges.
  • A vibrant team culture that celebrates successes through tech talks, team events, and social activities.

We value and respect individual differences and are dedicated to providing equal employment opportunities regardless of race, gender, age, religion, sexual orientation, or disability. We believe that diversity enhances our innovation and success, and we strive to foster a workplace where everyone can thrive and contribute to our shared mission of advancing spaceflight safety.
