Quality Manager

PSJ Fabrications, a Wood subsidiary company is recruiting for a Quality Manager to join our Sheet Metal Fabrication team based in Bedford.

The Role

This is a pivotal leadership role responsible for safeguarding and enhancing the company’s quality management systems, maintaining key industry certifications, driving operational quality excellence, and ensuring compliance within highly regulated sectors. Proven experience operating within a regulated manufacturing environment is essential.

The successful candidate will provide strategic and operational leadership to the Quality and Inspection function, working collaboratively with Operations, Engineering, Production, and Commercial teams to ensure that products, processes, and systems consistently meet customer expectations, regulatory obligations, and business objectives. The role will champion a culture of continuous improvement, quality excellence, and operational discipline across the organisation.

The Key Objective of this role are:  

Quality Management Systems:

• Maintain and improve ISO 9001, ISO 14001, EN ISO 3834, and EN 1090 management systems
• Lead certification and internal audits, ensuring compliance with quality standards and customer requirements
• Drive corrective actions and continuous improvement initiatives

Quality Performance & KPI Management:

• Manage and improve key quality metrics, including RFT, NCRs, COPQ, Supplier Quality, OTIF, and Customer Complaints
• Monitor performance, conduct root cause analysis, and implement improvement actions

Quality Engineering & Process Control:

• Develop and maintain PFMEAs and Control Plans
• Support new product introduction, process improvements, risk management, and defect reduction initiatives

Inspection & Calibration:

• Oversee inspection, testing, product release, and conformity verification activities
• Manage calibration systems and ensure traceability of measuring equipment

Customer & Supplier Quality:

• Serve as the main quality contact for customers and suppliers
• Lead audits, investigate quality issues, and drive timely resolution of complaints and non-conformances

Team Leadership:

• Lead, coach, and develop the Quality and Inspection team
• Promote a culture of quality excellence, accountability, and continuous improvement

Regulatory & Industry Compliance:

• Ensure compliance with nuclear and other highly regulated industry requirements, including RCC-M, weld quality, traceability, and configuration control where applicable

Expected:

• HNC/HND or Degree in Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality Management, or related discipline
• Lead Auditor qualification (ISO 9001 or equivalent)
• Thorough understanding of quality management systems and manufacturing quality principles
• Previous experience in a Quality Management leadership role
• Proven experience within a highly regulated manufacturing environment
• Strong background in sheet metal fabrication, welding, precision engineering, or associated manufacturing sectors
• Experience maintaining ISO 9001 certification
• Experience managing external certification and customer audits
• Experience leading quality improvement programmes and reducing non-conformance
• Experience managing quality engineering activities including PFMEA and Control Plans
• Experience in calibration management systems
• Experience leading and developing quality and inspection teams
• Proven track record of improving business KPI performance

Preferred:

• Nuclear industry experience
• Working knowledge of RCC-M requirements
• Experience with EN ISO 3834 compliance
• Experience with EN 1090 execution classes
• Knowledge of welding quality systems and special process control
• Experience supporting Defence, Aerospace, Energy, Rail, or similarly regulated sectors
• Formal Six Sigma, Lean Manufacturing, or Continuous Improvement qualifications
• Chartered Quality Professional status or equivalent
• Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt
• CQI membership
• Welding or fabrication-related qualifications
