VERSATILITY. EXPERTISE.

With these two words, Vertex makes the promise that we will always be versatile in developing solutions to our clients’ unique needs and that we will always demonstrate expertise in our designated fields.

Vertex is a leading North American provider of environmental services, assisting clients in achieving their development goals through our versatile suite of services. From the initial site selection, consultation and regulatory approval, through the construction, operation and maintenance phases, to conclusion and environmental cleanup, Vertex offers a diverse range of services throughout the life cycle of our clients’ projects.

OVERVIEW

Vertex is establishing a Regional Lead, Regulatory and Air for Southwestern Ontario, based in Sarnia. The role carries technical and project leadership for the region's environmental regulatory approvals, air quality, and noise work, along with coordination of the field resources that deliver it. This includes energy and industrial developments, pipelines and associated facilities, power transmission and distribution lines, renewable energy projects, industrial clients across Sarnia-Lambton and the broader southwestern Ontario market, and the community-based emissions monitoring programs delivered through the Aamjiwnaang Vertex Joint Venture.

The Regional Lead manages regulatory and air projects from proposal through delivery, coordinates field technicians and Direct Service Providers (DSPs) on field service work, and works with the Regional Lead, Liability Management and the Regional Lead, Commercial to share resources across the region. The role is built for someone who wants to grow from technical specialist into a regional leader: running projects, developing a local team, and becoming Vertex's recognized regulatory and air authority in southwestern Ontario.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Project Management and Technical Lead (35%)

  • Act as project manager and technical lead for regulatory and air projects in southwestern Ontario, including scoping, budgeting, scheduling, resourcing, and client communication.
  • Serve as the regional technical authority on air quality and noise, including dispersion modelling inputs and review, ambient and fenceline monitoring design, dust assessment and management, and stack and fugitive emissions measurement.
  • Lead or support Ontario regulatory approvals and compliance deliverables across environmental media, including Environmental Compliance Approvals, EASR registrations, ESDM reports and acoustic assessments, OEB applications and compliance, Municipal development regulations and other MECP permits and approvals, working with the Director, Regulatory on strategy and senior review.
  • Build a working understanding of the full Ontario approvals landscape so clients have one regional point of contact for regulatory questions, drawing on the Regulatory group for specialist support.
  • Track project costs, manage change, approve field documentation, and support invoicing with complete backup.
  • Prepare scopes, budgets, and technical content for proposals with support from the Directors.

Field Coordination (30%)

  • Plan, schedule, and coordinate field programs for regulatory and air work across the region: ambient and fenceline monitoring, EPA Method 21 LDAR, noise and dust surveys, and measurement campaigns.
  • Coordinate field technicians and DSPs on field service work, including scheduling, scope communication, site readiness, and verification that DSP deliverables meet Vertex standards.
  • Coordinate resources with the Regional Lead, Liability Management and the Regional Lead, Commercial so staff and DSPs are shared effectively across regional projects.
  • Coordinate field delivery of the Aamjiwnaang community emissions monitoring programs in partnership with Aamjiwnaang leadership and members, and represent Vertex in the day-to-day running of those programs.
  • Provide hands-on supervision, coaching, and mentorship to field technicians, including training of Aamjiwnaang community members.
  • Ensure equipment is maintained, calibrated, and field-ready, and that calibration and maintenance records are complete.
  • Enforce health, safety, and environmental requirements in alignment with Vertex and site-specific policies.

Regulatory Oversight and QA/QC (25%)

  • Review and QA/QC field data, monitoring reports, modelling inputs, and regulatory submissions before they go to clients, regulators, or community partners.
  • Maintain working knowledge of Ontario MECP requirements and guidance for air, noise, and approvals, and flag regulatory changes that affect clients or Vertex methods.
  • Develop and refine standard operating procedures for regional field programs, LDAR, and community monitoring.
  • Approve timesheets and expenses for assigned staff and review DSP invoices against scope.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives related to data quality, field efficiency, and safety.

Business Development (10%)

  • Support regulatory and air pursuits in southwestern Ontario with scoping and technical content.
  • Maintain relationships with existing industrial clients and site contacts, and represent Vertex and the Aamjiwnaang Vertex Joint Venture at client meetings and local industry events as requested.
  • Identify opportunities to expand community monitoring programs and create long-term local employment.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 5+ years of experience in air quality, emissions monitoring, or environmental regulatory work, with direct Ontario experience.
  • Strong technical knowledge of ambient and fenceline monitoring networks, LDAR practices and equipment, and Ontario air and noise regulatory frameworks.
  • Working knowledge of Ontario environmental approvals and permitting beyond air, with the ability to scope and coordinate submissions with specialist support.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage projects, field teams, and contractors and deliver on schedule and budget.
  • Proficient in QA/QC processes for environmental monitoring data.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects and priorities.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for staff leadership, client interaction, and community engagement.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and project management tools.
  • Valid driver's licence and ability to travel to field locations across southwestern Ontario.
