Regional Safety & Security Director

What We Can Achieve Together:

The Regional Safety and Security Director oversees all aspects of managing the physical safety and security of staff, volunteers, and third parties (e.g., donors, preserve visitors) working for or on behalf of The Nature Conservancy (TNC) throughout the Africa and Europe Regions. They will be responsible for working both independently and in coordination with TNC’s Safety Team to establish operational standards for workplace and program safety; provide technical safety support and guidance to Conservancy staff and volunteers; conduct and facilitate trainings and drills; facilitate the formation and operation of BU and/or Regional safety/security committees; ensure compliance with applicable country workplace health and safety requirements; and otherwise mitigate potential physical safety and security risks to TNC staff and volunteers.

The position may include the following functions:

• Provides input, guidance, and hands-on support to TNC BUs, Regions, and individual project teams to prepare emergency management plans.
• Assists TNC Africa and Europe BUs and Regions identify appropriate safety/security related protocols to address location and/or activity specific safety and security needs.
• In coordination with TNC Safety professionals, updates, maintains, strengthens, and supports organizational compliance with and local accountability for regional and/or global safety and security policies and procedures, guidelines, protocols, and overall duty of care.
• Develops training programs and drills to increase regional staff and volunteer awareness and skills in meeting safety and security policies, procedures, guidelines, and protocols, working independently and in coordination with TNC Safety.
• Provides input and guidance on TNC safety/security related Crisis Response.
• Conducts safety and security reviews to ensure compliance with applicable country workplace safety, security, and illness and injury prevention requirements and TNC’s other internal standards.
• Reviews, updates, and trains TNC staff on TNC’s Safety Incident Reporting Tool (SIRT) and other hazard and incident reporting, to include escalation, investigation, and reporting expectations and requirements.
• Promotes safe work practices and compliance with all related Conservancy policies and procedures.
• Maintains up-to-date knowledge on safety and security standards, industry best-practices, and current events and international relations within supported Regions.
• Investigates safety/security incidents, including both critical safety incidents and near-misses (in coordination with internal stakeholders, as needed) including root cause analysis, and recommends and/or implements changes to business practices arising from the investigation, as needed.
• Maintain a network of regional safety and security liaisons (as assigned in agreement with the applicable regional leadership) to gather or disburse safety and security information across all the places TNC works.
• Maintain a robust regional site on CONNECT at TNC that provides clear and concise safety and security information, guidance, and resources to staff on a range of safety and security topics, including field safety, travel risk, medical evacuation planning, international SOS, and critical incident response, which is tailored to individual country programs, as needed.

We are looking for a highly organized, detail-oriented safety and security professional who can confidently manage multiple priorities while remaining composed in high-pressure and unpredictable situations. The ideal candidate is comfortable using technology to improve results, brings diplomacy and sound judgment to complex situations, and builds trusted relationships across all levels of a global organization. They are a strong communicator and collaborator who can motivate others, work effectively with peers and partners, and influence safety and security strategies, awareness, and initiatives across diverse regional contexts. A successful candidate will also have demonstrated experience developing and implementing strategic program goals in complex, cross-regional or international environments.

This position will be a hybrid role out of The Nature Conservancy's Nairobi office.

What You’ll Bring:

• BA/BS degree and 7 years’ experience in safety, security, and/or emergency management or a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Safety and Security related experience working in Africa and Europe.
• Experience with safety and security audits, reviews and/or investigations.
• Demonstrated knowledge of safety legislation, codes of practice and best practices;
• Experience working internationally, in global/international and cross-cultural environments.
• Experience directing complex or multiple projects of strategic importance and meeting deadlines.
• Communicating clearly via written, spoken, and graphical means in English.

Desired Qualifications

• Experience in conservation, environmental or sustainability sectors.

• Experience networking with non-profit partners, community groups and/or government agencies.

• First Aid Officer and Remote First Aid Training.

• Experience in operation and maintenance of small boats, high level boating training and certifications, and/or experience in dive and boat training and curriculum design.

• Knowledge of current underwater scientific methodologies, conservation, and projects.
