Location: Remote About Switch At Switch, we don’t just design, build and operate data centers—we are enabling the technology of the future. Led by Founder & CEO, Rob Roy, we believe in revolutionary innovation, operational excellence and the principle of karma. Switch is where talented people come together to EVOLVE the digital world. We believe that innovation isn’t just about technology—it’s about the people, culture, and purpose that make it happen. Every Switch team member contributes to a mission greater than themselves: to create the world’s most advanced digital infrastructure that powers the progress of humanity. The Role: Reliability Engineer - Electrical As a Reliability Engineer - Electrical at Switch, you will own complex reliability analysis for mission-critical electrical systems. This role sits within RCM Analysis & Maintenance Strategy in the Reliability Engineering department. You will develop electrical BIA and FMEA packages, define monitoring requirements, and recommend maintenance, testing, spare-parts, and design-change actions. Your work will improve infrastructure reliability, maintenance quality, operational readiness, and risk-based investment decisions. This is an individual contributor role with no direct reports, but you may provide technical guidance during assigned work. What You’ll Do Define electrical system boundaries, functions, performance standards, redundancy assumptions, and criticality. Analyze utility service, transformers, generators, switchgear, transfer systems, automatic transfer switches, UPS systems, batteries, distribution equipment, and related controls. Validate one-line diagrams, protection intent, operating modes, bypass paths, and common-cause vulnerabilities. Develop electrical BIA and FMEA packages that document failure modes, effects, causes, leading indicators, detection methods, and action thresholds. Define telemetry and condition-monitoring requirements for critical electrical failure modes. Recommend preventive, condition-based, and predictive maintenance strategies by failure mode. Recommend electrical inspections, testing, spare-parts strategies, redesigns, or run-to-failure decisions when appropriate. Support event reviews, root-cause analyses, commissioning, vendor technical reviews, and design-change evaluations. Facilitate technical workshops and document assumptions, decisions, risks, owners, and follow-up actions. Track completed analyses, telemetry and maintenance gaps, peer-review findings, risk reduction, and preventive maintenance improvements. What We’re Looking For Operating in Mission-Critical Mode: Balances reliability, safety, maintainability, cost, and operating constraints in each recommendation. Clear in Communications: Translates complex technical evidence into clear, decision-ready information. Compelled to Contribute: Moves from identifying risk to proposing practical monitoring, maintenance, testing, or design changes. Supportive of the Team: Works constructively with operations, design, controls, commissioning, vendors, and technology partners. Consistently Reliable: Follows through on commitments, documents decisions, and raises risks early. What You’ll Bring Required Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or an equivalent combination of technical education and relevant experience. Four or more years of experience in electrical reliability, electrical design, commissioning, or critical-facilities operations. Experience with several of the following: power systems, protection and controls, switchgear, UPS systems, generators, batteries, transfer systems, or electrical distribution. Ability to interpret one-line diagrams, protection requirements, operating modes, and electrical system redundancy. Experience with electrical maintenance, testing, condition monitoring, or failure analysis. Ability to facilitate subject matter expert workshops, validate conditions in the field, review vendor recommendations, and communicate operational risk. Ability to write clear technical findings, recommendations, and action plans. Ability to read and follow technical documents, site procedures, safety requirements, and change-control processes. Ability to obtain and maintain the electrical safety training and site qualifications required for assigned work. Ability to work across office or remote settings and active data center sites, with 25% to 40% travel and selected maintenance-window support. Ability to work in environments that may include extended walking or standing, stairs, ladders, mechanical and electrical rooms, noise, temperature changes, and required PPE. The role may require carrying field equipment or documents weighing up to 35 pounds. Work near energized or operating systems is performed only under approved procedures and qualifications. Reasonable accommodations may be made for qualified individuals with disabilities. Preferred Professional Engineer license, NETA-related expertise, CMRP, or CRL credential. Experience with large-scale data center power systems, protection studies, NETA testing, or brownfield work in operating facilities. Qualified candidates are encouraged to apply even if they do not meet every preferred qualification. Why Switch?
