Remote | Physics Expert (Professor / Principal Investigator) — $80–$160/hour
24-MAGWe are sharing a specialised consulting opportunity for established Physics Professors, Principal Investigators, and senior research leaders with deep subject-matter expertise, independent research experience, strong scientific judgement, and the ability to evaluate competing technical arguments with rigor and precision.
Selected professionals will adjudicate complex physics problems, compare alternative derivations and interpretations, identify the assumptions and regimes that determine whether an approach is valid, and produce defensible written assessments suitable for review by senior researchers. The work requires substantial scholarly depth, calibrated scientific judgement, and the ability to distinguish genuine uncertainty from technical error. No prior experience in AI is required.
Key Responsibilities
Expert Physics Adjudication
- Evaluate competing physics arguments, calculations, and interpretations
- Determine whether conclusions follow from stated assumptions
- Identify mathematical, conceptual, or physical inconsistencies
- Assess whether alternative solutions are equivalent, complementary, or genuinely conflicting
- Provide authoritative but appropriately qualified technical judgements
Comparative Solution Analysis
- Compare multiple approaches to the same physics problem
- Explain which methods are applicable under specific assumptions and physical regimes
- Identify advantages, limitations, and failure modes of different formulations
- Analyse approximations and determine where they remain valid
- Distinguish substantive differences from alternative but equally valid representations
Meta-Level Scientific Reasoning
- Define criteria for evaluating the robustness of technical arguments
- Identify assumptions that materially affect a conclusion
- Determine where approximations, perturbative treatments, or modelling choices may break down
- Evaluate sensitivity to boundary conditions, parameter regimes, or theoretical assumptions
- Articulate what constitutes sufficient evidence for a defensible physics conclusion
Scientific Uncertainty & Confidence Assessment
- Exercise calibrated confidence when evaluating difficult or ambiguous questions
- Clearly distinguish established results from open problems
- Identify cases where available information is insufficient for a definitive conclusion
- Explain the sources and implications of genuine scientific uncertainty
- Avoid overstating conclusions where multiple interpretations remain viable
Technical Verification
- Use LaTeX to communicate mathematical reasoning clearly
- Apply symbolic or numerical tools such as SymPy, Python, and Jupyter where appropriate
- Reproduce or verify calculations supporting technical claims
- Test limiting cases or representative parameter regimes
- Use computational checks to strengthen or challenge analytical conclusions
Written Scientific Evaluation
- Draft rigorous written assessments suitable for review by senior physicists
- Explain technical reasoning in a structured and defensible manner
- Identify the strongest evidence supporting or challenging a conclusion
- Clearly document assumptions, methodology, and relevant caveats
- Maintain a high standard of precision in mathematical and scientific communication
Research-Level Domain Guidance
- Apply deep expertise within the relevant physics subfield
- Evaluate whether technical approaches align with current research practice
- Identify overlooked literature-level considerations or conceptual issues
- Provide guidance on ambiguous or research-level questions
- Contribute independent judgement informed by substantial scholarly experience
Ideal Profile
- PhD in Physics
- Demonstrated scholarly expertise and research impact within a defined physics subfield
- Current or former Associate Professor, Full Professor, Chair Professor, Principal Investigator, Group Leader, or comparable senior research professional
- Strong record of independent research leadership

- Strong analytical and meta-level reasoning ability
- Ability to articulate uncertainty and limitations precisely
- Familiarity with LaTeX, SymPy, Python, and Jupyter is highly valuable
- Candidates should clearly indicate any gaps in experience with these technical tools
- No prior AI-training or model-evaluation experience is required
