Job Description – Revit Templates & Families Creator
Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced Revit Templates & Families Creator to develop, standardise and maintain high-quality Autodesk Revit templates, parametric families and BIM content.
The role will focus on creating a consistent and scalable Revit environment that enables architectural, structural and MEP teams to work efficiently while maintaining agreed BIM standards. The successful candidate will have strong hands-on experience with Revit family creation, parameter management, templates, schedules, view standards and BIM content libraries.
Key Responsibilities
- Create, configure and maintain company-standard Revit project templates (.RTE) for architectural, structural and/or MEP projects.
- Develop high-quality Revit families (.RFA), including loadable, system, hosted, face-based and nested families as required.
- Create intelligent parametric families using dimensions, constraints, formulas, visibility parameters and configurable types.
- Develop and manage shared, project, family and global parameters, ensuring consistent naming and data structures.
- Build standard Revit views, view templates, filters, schedules, sheets, title blocks, legends, annotations and documentation standards.
- Create reusable BIM content for elements such as doors, windows, furniture, equipment, fixtures, fittings, casework, building components and MEP equipment.
- Optimise family geometry and data to maintain appropriate Levels of Development (LOD) and Levels of Information Need while avoiding unnecessarily heavy models.
- Configure templates covering project units, object styles, line styles, materials, fill patterns, browser organisation, worksets and other project standards.
- Develop schedules and data structures to support quantities, specifications, asset information and BIM deliverables.
- Establish and maintain a structured Revit family/content library, including naming conventions, classifications, version control and approval processes.
- Review existing Revit families and templates, identify quality or performance issues and rebuild/optimise content where necessary.
- Test families for flexing, parameter behaviour, hosting, visibility, scheduling, tagging and project performance before release.
- Ensure templates and families support organisational BIM standards, ISO 19650 principles and project/client requirements, where applicable.
- Work closely with BIM Managers, architects, engineers, designers and project teams to understand content requirements and translate them into reusable BIM components.
- Produce user guides, family creation standards and documentation to help project teams use BIM content consistently.
- Provide ongoing technical support and troubleshooting for Revit templates and families.
- Continuously identify opportunities to automate and improve BIM content creation and management.
Required Skills & Experience
- Strong hands-on experience with Autodesk Revit.
- Demonstrated experience creating Revit templates and parametric families from scratch.
- Advanced understanding of:
- Family Editor
- Reference planes and constraints
- Instance and type parameters
- Shared parameters
- Nested and shared families
- Formulas and conditional parameters
- Visibility controls
- Materials and subcategories
- Type catalogues
- Tags and annotations
- Schedules and quantities
- View templates and filters
- Project Browser organisation
- Family Editor
- Understanding of BIM modelling and documentation standards.
- Ability to create lightweight, efficient and scalable Revit content rather than unnecessarily complex families.
- Experience managing BIM libraries and maintaining consistent naming and parameter standards.
- Ability to interpret architectural/engineering drawings, manufacturer specifications and product information and convert them into accurate BIM content.
- Strong attention to detail and quality assurance.
- Good communication and documentation skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple BIM-content requests.
Highly Desirable
Experience with Dynamo for Revit, Autodesk Construction Cloud/BIM 360, Navisworks, AutoCAD, BIM interoperability and IFC workflows would be advantageous.
Experience developing BIM content for Australian AEC projects and familiarity with Australian building/documentation practices would also be highly regarded.
Knowledge of Revit API, Python, C# or other BIM automation technologies would be beneficial but is not mandatory.
Key Deliverables
The successful candidate will be expected to develop and maintain:
Standard Revit Templates → Revit Family Library → Shared Parameter Library → View Templates → Schedules → Title Blocks → Annotation Families → Material Library → BIM Content Standards → QA/QC Procedures → User Documentation
Candidate Profile
We are looking for someone who is more than a Revit modeller. The ideal candidate is a BIM content specialist who understands how to build reusable, intelligent and maintainable Revit content that can be deployed consistently across multiple projects and project teams.
Candidates should be able to demonstrate a portfolio of Revit families and templates they have personally created, and explain their approach to parameters, family performance, standardisation and quality control.
Portfolio requirement: Shortlisted candidates may be requested to demonstrate or provide examples of Revit templates, parametric families or BIM libraries they have developed.
