About Avant

Avant is Australia’s leading medical defence organisation, supporting medical professionals across Australia with products and services designed around their professional, personal and practice needs. As a mutual organisation owned by our members, they are at the centre of what we do. Avant also contributes to quality, safety and professionalism in medicine through advocacy, education and research.

About the Role

We are looking for a Risk Adviser in our Sydney office. This unique role will see you delivering Risk Advisory Services through medical practitioner risk assessments, practice risk assessments, educational presentations, and written advice. You will play a critical role in strengthening patient safety, quality, and risk awareness across healthcare. If you have previous nursing, healthcare safety and quality or practice management experience and are looking for a change this could be the ideal opportunity to broaden your expertise in a member owned insurance environment while applying your knowledge of healthcare safety and quality.

You are a curious and proactive professional who thrives on learning. You bring influential communication skills, the ability to engage doctors, practice managers, and internal stakeholders with clarity and confidence. Your empathetic and collaborative approach ensures you build strong relationships, foster trust, and work effectively across diverse teams. With a passion for continuous improvement and patient safety, you are motivated to identify risks, share knowledge to highlight strategies that elevate standards of care and reduce claims exposure.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct risk assessments with medical practitioners and practices, identifying areas of medico-legal risk and opportunities for improvement.
• Provide clear, practical and timely risk management advice, reports and recommendations.
• Support members to implement risk management recommendations and education.
• Provide medico-legal risk management insights and advice to teams across Avant.
• Develop and deliver presentations and educational content on medico-legal risk for doctors, practices and other audiences.
• Build trusted relationships with medical practitioners, practice leaders and internal and external stakeholders.
• Work collaboratively across Avant to deliver positive outcomes for members.
• Identify emerging risks and opportunities to enhance Risk Advisory Services.
• Contribute to service improvements that strengthen the quality, safety and professionalism of medical practice.
• Travel to member practices, regional centres and Avant locations as required.

About You

You’ll bring practical healthcare experience along with the confidence to engage and influence medical practitioners and practice leaders.

Ideally, you will have:

• Operational experience within a healthcare environment.
• Experience or exposure to clinical quality, safety and risk management.
• Strong communication and influencing skills, with the ability to translate complex issues into clear and practical advice.
• Experience building relationships with medical practitioners, healthcare teams and senior stakeholders.
• Strong organisation and time-management skills with the ability to manage competing priorities.
• A collaborative approach and experience working across teams to achieve organisational outcomes.
• Confidence presenting or educating professional audiences.
• A tertiary qualification in a health-related discipline is desirable.
• Previous risk advisory experience would be advantageous.
• Experience as a health educator or healthcare leader in a tertiary hospital or medical practice environment would also be highly regarded

The role involves interstate and regional travel to support members, with occasional weekend or after-hours work associated with presentations or member support.
