About Switch

At Switch, we don’t just design, build and operate data centers—we are enabling the technology of the future. Led by Founder & CEO, Rob Roy, we believe in revolutionary innovation, operational excellence and the principle of karma. Switch is where talented people come together to EVOLVE the digital world.

We believe that innovation isn’t just about technology—it’s about the people, culture, and purpose that make it happen. Every Switch team member contributes to a mission greater than themselves: to create the world’s most advanced digital infrastructure that powers the progress of humanity.

The Role: Safety Director, Special Projects

This role leads environmental, health, and safety strategy and execution for Switch electrical infrastructure and construction work nationwide. You will oversee EHS for substations, power generation, power plant construction, power line construction, utility installation, medium- and high-voltage systems, facility expansions, and data center retrofits.

Embedded with the Switch RIG team, you will help identify and manage EHS risks throughout the planning and execution of electrical construction. You will set consistent expectations across Switch campuses, contractors, subcontractors, and project partners. The role requires direct involvement in complex, high-risk construction while building consistent EHS practices across a national portfolio.

What You’ll Do

  • Own EHS strategy and execution for electrical infrastructure and construction projects across Switch campuses nationwide.
  • Oversee EHS for substation construction, power generation, power plant construction, power line construction, cross-country utility installation, and medium- and high-voltage work.
  • Support facility expansions, retrofits, and other RIG-led projects where construction affects electrical infrastructure or live data center environments.
  • Embed EHS requirements into project planning and execution with RIG engineering, construction, operations, and project teams.
  • Set EHS expectations for contractors and subcontractors, including review and enforcement of site-specific safety plans.
  • Lead and manage contract EHS owner's representatives supporting Switch projects, setting priorities, expectations, and accountability across the portfolio.
  • Direct contract EHS owner's representatives in monitoring field conditions, contractor performance, compliance, and corrective actions on behalf of Switch.
  • Monitor contractor safety performance, identify trends, and require corrective action when standards are not met.
  • Manage and direct other third-party safety consultants representing Switch on applicable projects.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local EHS requirements, including environmental compliance and required recordkeeping.
  • Lead investigations for incidents that meet defined thresholds and ensure corrective actions are completed and sustained.
  • Partner with operational safety teams to manage risks when construction or electrical work affects active facilities.
  • Serve as an EHS point of contact for regulators, insurance representatives, contractors, and other external stakeholders on assigned projects.
  • Track EHS performance across the portfolio and use trends, incidents, and lessons learned to improve standards and execution.
  • Lead EHS resource planning for assigned projects, including staffing, owner's representative coverage, consultant support, tools, and program needs.
  • Lead and develop EHS team members supporting the electrical construction portfolio, setting priorities and clear performance expectations.

What We’re Looking For

  • You set clear safety expectations and hold employees, contractors, and project partners accountable for meeting them.
  • You use sound judgment when conditions change or information is incomplete, with safety and operational risk at the center of decisions.
  • You communicate critical information directly and clearly across engineering, construction, operations, contractors, and leadership.
  • You are comfortable stopping work, addressing conflict, enforcing standards, and escalating risk when needed.
  • You can prioritize across multiple campuses and concurrent projects without losing sight of high-risk work.
  • You bring solutions when issues arise and follow through until risks and corrective actions are resolved.
  • You build productive working relationships while maintaining clear EHS standards and accountability.
  • You are reliable in mission-critical environments where planning, protocol, and consistent execution matter.

What You’ll Bring

Required

  • Progressive experience leading EHS programs for complex construction, electrical infrastructure, utilities, power generation, or comparable high-risk work.
  • Experience with medium- and high-voltage construction and related electrical safety risks.
  • Experience supporting projects such as substations, utility infrastructure, power generation, power plants, transmission or distribution systems, or large-scale electrical construction.
  • Experience overseeing EHS across multiple projects, sites, or geographic locations.
  • Experience leading contract EHS owner's representatives, third-party safety professionals, or similar field resources across multiple projects.
  • Experience setting and enforcing EHS requirements for general contractors, subcontractors, and third-party partners.
  • Demonstrated experience developing, implementing, and sustaining EHS programs, standards, and training.
  • Experience leading EHS professionals or third-party safety resources.
  • Working knowledge of construction safety regulations and environmental compliance requirements.
  • Ability to work effectively in active construction and mission-critical facility environments.
  • Ability to travel regularly to Switch campuses and project sites nationwide based on project needs.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools, including Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook, and dashboard tools such as Power BI.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English fluently.

Preferred

  • Approximately 10+ years of construction or electrical infrastructure EHS experience with increasing scope and accountability.
  • Experience supporting large-scale data center, mission-critical, utility, power generation, or comparable infrastructure construction.
  • Experience managing EHS where construction and electrical work interface with live operating facilities.
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
  • Professional safety certification such as CSP, CHST, or ASP.

Qualified candidates are encouraged to apply even if they do not meet every preferred qualification.
