Safety Leader
Summary
The Safety Leader is responsible for supporting the implementation and day to day execution of company's safety programs under the Regional Safety Manager to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, company policies, and industry best practices. This role conducts field audits, investigations, training, and risk assessments while partnering with operations leadership to promote a culture of safety, reduce workplace incidents, and continuously improve safety performance across all locations. Leader serves as a key resource for employee development, regulatory compliance, incident management, and traffic control safety operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Implement and support the company's safety program, policies procedures and initiatives while promoting a culture of safety, compliance, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Conduct routine jobsite, facility, and project inspections to identify hazards, evaluate risk, and ensure compliance with company policies, OSHA regulations, MUTCD standards, DOT requirements, and applicable federal, state, and local regulations in coordination with Field Operations Supervisors.
- Verify proper implementation of traffic control plans, work zone setups, flagging operations, and safe work practices.
- Ensure employees utilize required PPE and follow established safety procedures, including vehicle operation, defensive driving, backing protocols, and equipment inspections.
- Coordinate and deliver approved safety training programs, toolbox talks, safety meetings, and refresher courses. Maintain ATSSA and other required training schedules, records, certifications, and compliance documentation. Monitor training and certification expirations. Identify new training needs and provide recommendations to Regional Safety Manager.
- Respond to and investigate incidents, injuries, motor vehicle accidents, near misses, property damage, and safety concerns in accordance with company procedures. Collect evidence, conduct interviews, identify root causes, recommend and track corrective and preventive actions, and submit investigation findings to Regional Safety Manager.
- Monitor and address workplace hazards, including traffic exposure, equipment operations, environmental conditions, heat stress, overhead hazards, and other jobsite risks.
- Coach employees and supervisors on safe work behaviors and promptly address unsafe acts or conditions. Escalate significant incidents, serious hazards, and reoccurring safety behaviors to the Regional Safety Manager.
- Assist in the maintenance of safety records including inspection reports, incident documentation, safety metrics, corrective action and other regulatory and company-required records.
- Administer safety-related programs including driver safety monitoring through fleet telematics/GPS system (Samsara), employee coaching and corrective training substance abuse testing , contractor prequalification platforms, and other risk management initiatives.
- Assist Regional Safety Manager in workers' compensation, auto liability, general liability, and insurance claim investigations and reporting.
- Assist Regional Safety Manager with OSHA and ISNetworld recordkeeping.
- Collaborate with Human Resources and operational leadership to provide documented safety performance information including inspection findings, coaching activities, training compliance and reoccurring safety concerns.
- Participate and maintain relationships with professional organizations in our industry.
- Provide backup coverage for Field Operations Supervisors.
- Monitor company safety KPIs, incident trends, driver safety performance, inspection findings, training compliance and corrective action completion, and provide routine safety performance updates to the Regional Safety Manager and company leadership in weekly safety meetings.
Essential Functions
- Frequent travel to job sites to conduct inspections, audits, investigations, and training.
- Observe work activities in active traffic control and construction environments.
- Prepare reports, maintain records, and communicate safety expectations to employees and leadership.
- Respond to incidents and safety concerns as needed, including occasional after-hours support.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.

- Ability to identify hazards, assess risk, investigate incidents, and implement corrective actions.
- Ability to prioritize multiple projects and adapt to changing operational demands.
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills with the ability to work independently in field and office environments.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required; Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field preferred.
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience in a safety, operations, construction, or traffic control-related role, with traffic control industry experience strongly preferred.
- Working knowledge of OSHA regulations, MUTCD standards, DOT requirements, and traffic control safety principles.
- Experience conducting safety inspections, audits, incident investigations, and employee training.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and other business software.
- Experience supporting workers' compensation, vehicle accident, or general liability claim investigations preferred.
- Professional safety certifications such as OSHA 30/500, ATSSA Traffic Control Supervisor (TCS), CHST, ASP, CSP, or First Aid/CPR Instructor certifications are preferred.
Work Location
This role will operate in a hybrid work environment, with responsibilities requiring a combination of field and office-based work. The position will require regular travel between field locations and office locations based on operational needs, project requirements, and business priorities.
