We encourage early applications, as vacancies may close once, we receive sufficient applications.
We are seeking an engineer with a safety-related background to support the delivery of electronic hardware and embedded software for demanding, high-integrity applications. The role will combine hands-on engineering with technical coordination across the product lifecycle, from early concept and requirements definition through design, verification, validation, qualification and in-service support.
The successful candidate will understand how safety objectives influence architecture, requirements, design decisions, assurance evidence and release. Experience spanning both electronics and embedded software is particularly valuable. Ideally, you will also have experience of technical product management or product ownership, helping to shape priorities, manage technical scope and align multidisciplinary teams around customer and end-user needs.
You will be expected to:
- Lead on architecture level design, review and assurance activities for systems containing embedded electronics, firmware and software.
- Get into the detail when needed, for example by reviewing or creating circuit schematics or software source code.
- Translate customer, system and safety needs into clear product, hardware and software requirements with appropriate acceptance criteria and traceability.
- Lead and review the allocation of safety requirements across electronics, firmware and embedded software systems.
- Undertake or support hazard analysis, risk assessment, FMEA/FMECA, fault-tree analysis and the development of safety arguments and assurance evidence.
- Apply system level thinking to resolve technical issues and manage interfaces across customers, internal teams and supply chain.
- Provide proportionate technical product management or product ownership, at design reviews and in maintaining technical priorities, scope, risks, dependencies and delivery roadmaps.
- Engage with customers and stakeholders to clarify needs, communicate technical trade-offs and support evidence-based decisions.
Experienced Required
- Degree or equivalent experience in Electronic Engineering, Embedded Systems, Software Engineering, Systems Engineering or a related discipline.
- Experience delivering electronics and embedded software within a safety-related, high-integrity or regulated environment.
- Practical understanding of the interaction between hardware, firmware, embedded software and the wider system.
- Experience of requirements capture, decomposition, traceability and verification planning.
- Knowledge of safety lifecycle principles and the production of proportionate assurance evidence.
- Experience of electronic design and review, including analogue, digital or mixed-signal circuits, component selection, PCB considerations, EMC and reliability.
- Experience of embedded software development or assurance using languages such as C or C++, including real-time behaviour, interfaces, defensive design and test.
- Experience supporting integration, troubleshooting, verification, validation and qualification activities.
- Ability to communicate technical risk, uncertainty and trade-offs clearly to engineering and non-engineering stakeholders.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, collaboration and technical writing skills.
Desirable
- Experience of technical product management, product ownership or technical delivery leadership for complex engineering products.
- Experience with producing or reviewing conceptual, preliminary and detailed designs.
- Experience maintaining a product roadmap, prioritised backlog, release plan or technical delivery plan.
- Familiarity with relevant standards such as IEC 61508, ISO 26262, DO-254, DO-178C, DEF STAN 00-056, EN 50128/EN 50716 or comparable sector standards.
- Experience with model-based development, static analysis, coding standards, independent verification or software/hardware assurance.
- Experience with configuration management, change control, problem resolution and continuous improvement of engineering practice.
- Experience with tools such as DOORS, Jama Connect, Polarion, Azure DevOps or Jira for requirements and delivery management.
- Knowledge of communication protocols such as CAN, RS485, SPI, I²C or Ethernet.
- Experience in defence, aerospace, rail, automotive, nuclear, energy, medical devices or another regulated sector.
- Progress towards professional registration such as IEng or CEng.
Due to the nature of the work that Frazer-Nash Consultancy undertake, candidates will be required to undergo pre-employment screening and must be able to satisfy clearance criteria for UK National Security Vetting.
