The Role

We are looking for a Sales Engineer to join our team in Renfrew. In this role you will you'll work closely with customers, engineering teams and commercial colleagues to develop winning solutions for complex industrial applications. While the role has a commercial and customer-facing focus, technical capability is the critical requirement. While interacting with customers, the right candidate will be comfortable handling both technical and commercial questions. Having a strong base in each of the these disciplines will be the key to success and progression.

You'll take ownership of the opportunities, engaging directly with customers to understand their technical and commercial requirements before developing optimised solutions that deliver value for the customer and Howden.

You'll support projects involving axial fans, centrifugal fans and rotary heat exchangers across key markets including but not limited to power generation, carbon capture, nuclear energy, mining and wind tunnels. In addition to managing incoming opportunities, you'll also have the freedom to identify and develop new opportunities where you spot a customer need or market opportunity.

This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer who enjoys solving complex problems, building customer relationships and wants to broaden their career into the commercial side of engineering without losing the technical depth that makes the role exciting.

About Us

Howden, now part of Chart Industries and Baker Hughes, is a global leader in air and gas handling solutions, supporting some of the world's most complex industrial and energy projects.

Our technologies help customers improve efficiency, reliability and sustainability across a broad range of industries. From new power generation facilities and carbon capture projects to nuclear applications and advanced automotive wind tunnels, our equipment plays a critical role in shaping the future of industrial infrastructure.

When you join Howden, you'll become part of a business with the scale, expertise and global reach of Howden, Chart and Baker Hughes, opening the door to exciting career opportunities across engineering, project management, operations, sales and leadership.

What You Will Do

  • Take ownership of sales opportunities from initial enquiry through to contract award.
  • Engage directly with customers to understand their technical and commercial requirements.
  • Build trusted relationships with customer stakeholders and become a key technical point of contact.
  • Develop optimised technical solutions with support from product specialists and engineering teams.
  • Prepare technical and commercial proposals, tender documentation and cost calculations.
  • Support customers throughout the proposal process, responding to technical queries and providing clarification where required.
  • Work closely with engineering, procurement, project management and other internal stakeholders to develop competitive proposals.
  • Identify opportunities to differentiate Howden solutions from competitors and strengthen our position with customers.
  • Follow up proposals, gather feedback and support negotiations to maximise order conversion.
  • Identify and develop new business opportunities where customer engagement or market intelligence highlights potential demand.
  • Maintain accurate opportunity information within CRM systems.
  • Support internal approval processes for major contract awards.
  • Travel to customer sites and other Howden locations as required.

What Do You Bring?

An ideal candidate would likely have the following profile:

  • Degree, HND or equivalent qualification in Engineering.
  • Background in Mechanical, Process, Chemical, Electrical or a related engineering discipline.
  • Ability to understand complex technical requirements and develop practical engineering solutions.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Commercial awareness and an interest in working closely with customers.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
  • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
  • Self-motivation, initiative and a proactive approach to problem solving.
  • A desire to learn, develop and build a long-term career within a global engineering organisation.

Why Join Us?

  • Work on major, technically challenging engineering projects across some of the most important industrial and energy markets of the future.
  • Join a business operating across carbon capture, nuclear, power generation, mining, wind tunnels and other critical infrastructure, giving you exposure to a breadth of applications rarely found in a single engineering role.
  • Take genuine ownership of opportunities, working directly with customers from initial enquiry and solution development through to commercial negotiation and contract award.
  • Build a rare combination of technical and commercial expertise, developing your engineering knowledge while gaining direct experience in customer engagement, proposals, negotiations and major contract awards.
  • Gain international exposure, working with customers and projects across Europe and beyond, with opportunities for international travel as part of the role.
  • Develop specialist knowledge in axial fans, centrifugal fans and rotary heat exchanger technology, supported by experienced product specialists and engineering teams.
  • Make an impact rather than simply process enquiries. You'll have the freedom to identify opportunities, challenge conventional solutions and help shape how Howden wins new business.
  • Join a collaborative environment where you'll work across engineering, procurement, project management and commercial functions, giving you visibility across the full lifecycle of major engineered projects.
  • Build a long term career with opportunities to progress across Howden, Chart and Baker Hughes.
  • Join at an exciting point for the business, with the opportunity to help develop new customers, new applications and new markets rather than simply inheriting an established sales territory.
  • Be part of a team where technical curiosity, initiative and ambition are genuinely valuable and where strong performers can progressively take on larger, more complex and commercially significant opportunities.

If you're an engineer looking to combine technical problem-solving with customer engagement and want to be part of a business supporting critical infrastructure and energy projects around the world, we'd love to hear from you.
