Job Description Summary
GE Vernova is seeking a skilled SCADA System Engineer to lead and execute pre-commissioning, commissioning, integration, testing, and maintenance activities for Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), Substation Automation Systems (SAS), and Energy Management Systems (EMS). This role ensures safe integration, point-to-point testing, network configuration, troubleshooting, and customer handover of critical power infrastructure automation — including transmission substations, generation plants, and renewable energy integration sites — while meeting rigorous safety, quality, schedule, and cost requirements.Job Description
Core Responsibilities
- Lead and execute pre-commissioning, commissioning, startup, integration, testing, and maintenance of SCADA, SAS, and gateway systems.
- Perform and supervise hardware and software functional testing of:
- Substation Automation Systems (SAS) and Remote Terminal Units (RTUs).
- HMI (Human-Machine Interface) screens, alarm and event logging, and historical databases.
- Communication protocols (e.g., IEC 61850, IEC 60870-5-101/104, DNP3, Modbus).
- Network architecture, managed Ethernet switches, routers, firewalls, and fiber optic links.
- Time synchronization systems (IRIG-B, PTP / IEEE 1588).
- Point-to-point hardwired and logical signal verification between field devices and the master control room.
- Lead site teams, integration specialists, contractors, vendors, and subcontractors during automation testing phases.
- Coordinate daily site integration activities and commissioning schedules with electrical and protection teams.
- Troubleshoot complex communication faults, protocol mismatches, network bottlenecks, and perform Root Cause Analysis (RCA).
- Manage punch lists, Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs), software version control, site instructions, and point-to-point database lists.
- Review system architecture drawings, network topology diagrams, signal list mapping matrices, functional design specifications (FDS), and factory acceptance test (FAT) results.
- Support customer coordination, master station integration, end-to-end signal verification, energization, and acceptance testing.
- Maintain accurate technical reports, configuration backups, site acceptance test (SAT) records, daily reports, and project documentation.
Safety & Quality
Safety and quality leadership are core expectations of this role. When working with live control networks and auxiliary power supplies, the candidate must be comfortable working under:
- Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) requirements for DC control and auxiliary systems
- Cybersecurity and NERC CIP compliance standards
- OSHA / NFPA 70E standards
- IEEE / IEC / NETA standards
- GE Vernova safety and quality procedures
Candidates must demonstrate the ability to maintain high safety and quality standards even under significant schedule pressure.
Leadership Expectations
Beyond technical execution, this role requires:
- Mentoring junior automation engineers and technicians on SCADA configuration and testing methodologies.
- Coordinating multidisciplinary site and remote engineering teams.
- Managing software and hardware vendors and suppliers.
- Making sound decisions during critical cutover and energization windows.
- Communicating effectively with customers, utility dispatchers, and project management.
- Managing competing priorities under schedule pressure.
- Providing technical leadership and remote troubleshooting support for substation automation.
- Establishing best practices and driving continuous improvement in SCADA commissioning execution.
Project Management Component
This role carries project execution responsibility across the full project lifecycle for automation and control systems:
Planning → Mobilization → Network Installation → Point-to-Point Testing → Functional Testing → Integration & Commissioning → Energization → Customer Acceptance
Responsibilities include control over:
- Schedule for SCADA/SAS testing and integration milestones
- Specialized testing software, diagnostic tools, and network test equipment
- Costs and manpower utilization
- Technical documentation and software configuration management
- Risks and opportunities related to network security, protocol integration, and schedule alignment
- Customer requirements
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Power Systems, or equivalent experience.
- 5–8+ years of field and back-office experience in electrical power systems with a primary focus on SCADA, Substation Automation, and RTU commissioning.
Desired Technical Strengths
Strong candidates will have experience in several of the following areas:
- Substation Automation Systems (SAS) | SCADA & HMI Configuration | RTUs & Gateways | IEC 61850 (GOOSE & Sampled Values) | Industrial Networking & Cybersecurity | DNP3 / IEC 104 Protocols | Point-to-Point Signal Verification | HV Substations | Renewable Energy Integration
- Hands-on experience with SCADA/HMI configuration software (e.g., GE, ABB/Hitachi, Siemens, SEL) and protocol analyzers (e.g., Wireshark).
- Proven experience leading field testing and integration teams.
- Willingness to travel extensively (approximately 40–60%+, depending on position).
- Ability to work in Canada, the U.S., and potentially internationally.
- Knowledge of IEC 61850, DNP3, Modbus standards, and NERC CIP cybersecurity frameworks.
- Strong Microsoft Office skills and database familiarity.
- Fluency in English required; additional languages are an asset depending on the region.
