Salary Range: $110,000 - $150,000
Knowesis is currently seeking exceptional Scientific Review Officers (SROs) to join our team and provide invaluable support to the Biomedical Research Application Evaluation and Support (BRAES) program. SROs manage biomedical and health research peer reviews. They identify and select qualified reviewers, prepare reviewers for the evaluation process, facilitate peer review meetings, and ensure that review criteria are applied consistently and review outcomes are documented accurately and defensibly.
The Job Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
- Identify, evaluate, and select qualified scientific and specialist reviewers with the expertise required for assigned panels and applications.
- Assign reviewers to applications based on scientific expertise, conflicts of interest, panel needs, and workload.
- Provide reviewers with guidance on review policies, criteria, scoring, confidentiality, conflicts of interest, and review requirements.
- Monitor reviewer readiness and critique submission, quality, completeness, and compliance with established requirements.
- Administer and facilitate peer review meetings in accordance with established policies and Government requirements.
- Promote consistent application of review criteria and scoring procedures during peer review.
- Coordinate with Consumer Review staff regarding Consumer Reviewers assigned to panels.
- Ensure peer review outcomes and required scientific review documentation accurately reflect panel evaluations and support final scores.
- Identify and escalate reviewer, panel, schedule, quality, or scientific issues to the Scientific Review Manager as appropriate.
- Coordinate with panel-support and system-support staff so administrative and technical activities support timely, effective peer review.
Required Qualifications:
- PhD, MD, DVM, or equivalent research or clinical doctoral degree in a relevant discipline.
- At least five years of relevant professional experience following completion of the qualifying doctoral degree.
- Scientific credibility and professional judgment sufficient to guide accomplished researchers and clinicians.
- Outstanding verbal communication and scientific writing skills.
- Meticulous attention to detail and strong organizational and time-management skills.
- Ability to troubleshoot problems, respond to time-sensitive issues, and consistently apply established policies while maintaining confidentiality and scientific integrity.
- Proficiency with common office, virtual meeting, and web-based systems.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Ten or more years of relevant professional experience following completion of the qualifying doctoral degree.
- Experience managing Federal biomedical or health research peer review, particularly the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP) or comparable programs.
- Clinical, military health research, Military Treatment Facility, or Department of Defense (DoD) laboratory experience.
