About the role The Senior Accountant is responsible for managing advanced accounting functions, ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial records, supporting the month-end and year-end close processes, and providing financial analysis to support business decision-making. This role serves as a key contributor to the accounting team, mentors junior staff, and helps maintain compliance with accounting standards, internal controls, and regulatory requirements. This is a full-time Monday to Friday position based in Edmonton, with hybrid/remote flexibility. Key responsibilities Financial Accounting & Reporting Prepare, review, and approve complex journal entries and account reconciliations. Lead month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close activities to ensure timely and accurate financial reporting. Analyze financial results and investigate significant variances. Prepare financial statements and supporting schedules in accordance with GAAP and company policies. Maintain the integrity of the general ledger and chart of accounts. Account Reconciliations & Analysis Review balance sheet reconciliations and ensure timely resolution of outstanding items. Perform detailed analysis of revenue, expenses, accruals, and reserves. Monitor and reconcile intercompany transactions and balances. Analyze financial trends and provide actionable recommendations to management. Compliance & Internal Controls Ensure compliance with IFRS and company accounting policies. Support internal and external audits by preparing schedules and responding to audit inquiries. Assist in implementing and monitoring internal controls to safeguard company assets. Support tax reporting and regulatory compliance activities. Process Improvement Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, controls, and reporting efficiency. Participate in ERP implementations, system enhancements, and automation initiatives. Develop and document accounting policies and procedures. Leadership & Collaboration Mentor and provide guidance to Staff Accountants and other junior team members. Review work prepared by accounting staff to ensure accuracy and completeness. Partner with finance, operations, and other business functions to support organizational objectives. Serve as a subject matter expert for assigned accounting areas. About you Required Skills and Knowledge • Advanced knowledge of IFRS and accounting best practices. • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills. • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including Pivot Tables, XLOOKUP, and financial modeling. • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills. • Strong communication and interpersonal skills. • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment. • Proven ability to work independently and exercise sound professional judgment. • High level of integrity and professionalism. • Proactive and continuous improvement mindset. • Strong business acumen and ability to translate financial data into meaningful insights. • Collaborative team player with leadership potential. Required Work Experience • 4–7 years of progressive accounting experience. • Strong background in general ledger accounting, financial reporting, and account reconciliations. • Public accounting experience preferred. • Experience working with ERP systems and financial tools (SUN6, Cognos, or similar). Required Qualifications • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Business, or related field (MBA or CFA preferred for senior roles). • Finance qualification along with professional certification (CA, CPA, CFA, ACCA, AGMA) is advantageous.
