Senior Accountant

More than a technology company.

Empower LTC Pharmacies. Save Lives. Build the Future of Healthcare Technology.

SoftWriters is on a Mission to Save Lives!

As the market leader in long-term care pharmacy technology, SoftWriters builds software that enables our pharmacy partners to deliver exceptional patient care to the most vulnerable populations. We are proud of our culture — rooted in integrity, innovation, accountability, and collaboration — and of our #1 Top Workplace designation in Pittsburgh.

SoftWriters is entering a period of significant transformation across our finance and accounting function. We are upgrading our accounting system, billing utilities, and reporting capabilities, and modernizing long-standing manual processes into scalable, technology-enabled workflows. This role is central to that effort. We are seeking a seasoned accounting professional who can own core accounting responsibilities, contribute to system upgrades, and drive automation across the team as we scale.

This is a high-impact, high-visibility role on a growing, tight-knit team where everyone wears multiple hats. The right person will combine deep accounting expertise with a builder's mindset — someone equally comfortable owning a complex reconciliation and re-engineering the process that produced it, all while maintaining audit compliance and strong internal controls.

The Opportunity

We're seeking a Senior Accountant to play a lead role in the accounting team's day-to-day operations and in the modernization of its systems and processes. This role owns and executes core accounting functions — including accounts payable, accounts receivable, collections, invoicing, reconciliations, and month-end close — while serving as a key contributor to accounting system upgrades, billing utility enhancements, reporting improvements, and process automation initiatives.

That includes helping test and validate new accounting and billing platforms to ensure data integrity and process continuity through transitions. This person will also mentor developing colleagues and, over time, take on expanded responsibilities as the department evolves.

We are looking for a strong, well-rounded accountant with the technical depth to modernize operations and the flexibility to handle both high-level and hands-on work in a growing-company environment.

Location: Hybrid - Pittsburgh, PA (Core office days: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday)

Reports to: Controller

What You'll Do

Accounts Receivable, Billing & Collections

  • Support and, where assigned, lead the AR process — customer invoicing, cash application, and account reconciliation.
  • Lead or assist with collection efforts to maintain strong cash flow and address delinquent accounts.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to resolve billing discrepancies and ensure timely, accurate invoices.
  • Maintain supporting documentation for customer accounts, adjustments, and issue resolution.

Accounts Payable & Vendor Management

  • Support the accounts payable process, including vendor invoice review, validation, and payment in accordance with company policy and GAAP.
  • Research and resolve invoice discrepancies with vendors and internal teams.
  • Process and reconcile employee expense reports and company credit card activity.
  • Maintain accurate, organized, audit-ready AP documentation.
  • Provide back-up coverage across accounting functions as needed.

Month-End & Year-End Close

  • Own recurring journal entries, accruals, balance sheet reconciliations, and variance analysis.
  • Ensure reconciliations are timely, accurate, and GAAP compliant.
  • Maintain accurate financial records and supporting schedules for close activities, and identify and resolve discrepancies in a timely manner.
  • Prepare documentation to support internal and external audits, including audit requests, reconciliations, and evidence of controls.
  • Support Accounting and Finance leadership with ad hoc reporting, analyses, and special projects.

Process Improvement, Automation & System Implementation

  • Evaluate manual, legacy, and high-touch processes and lead automation and standardization using advanced Excel, workflow tools, ERP capabilities, and AI.
  • Design, implement, and document new and improved processes, including SOPs and process maps, and train and cross-train team members on updated workflows.
  • Serve as a key accounting contributor to the upgrade and implementation of the accounting system (ERP), billing utilities, and reporting tools, including requirements gathering, configuration, and fit-gap analysis.
  • Validate data conversions and reconcile pre- and post-migration balances to ensure completeness and accuracy.
  • Strengthen internal controls, documentation, and audit readiness across accounting workflows.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in a growing, multi-product, or complex operational environment.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP, full-cycle month-end close, and internal controls.
  • Proven ability to modernize, automate, and document accounting workflows.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills (complex formulas, pivot tables, lookups; automation a strong plus).
  • Experience with ERP systems such as Sage 300 or similar.
  • High attention to detail with strong problem-solving and analytical abilities.
  • Clear, effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple deadlines and projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to independently identify process weaknesses and drive improvements end to end.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Hands-on experience contributing to an ERP or billing system implementation or major upgrade, including testing and data validation.
  • Experience with workflow automation, AI-enabled tools, or process redesign.
  • Experience in a SaaS or software environment with recurring revenue and deferred revenue recognition.
  • Experience supporting internal and external audits and public-company / SOX-style control environments.
