What you will do
As a Senior Accounting Analyst, you will help safeguard the integrity of financial information for the Bank of Canada, its pension trust funds, and the Government of Canada domestic debt and foreign asset portfolios. You will take ownership of complex accounting and reporting matters, apply professional judgment, and connect activities across the Bank to their accounting and financial reporting impacts to understand and explain the Bank’s overall financial position and the underlying business, market and policy drivers.

Working under the general direction of a Senior Manager in Accounting Operations, you will serve as a senior subject-matter resource with a broad understanding of how activities across the Bank flow through financial systems, accounting processes and reporting. You will strengthen controls, resolve complex or non-standard issues, identify broader impacts and dependencies, and shape improvements to accounting processes, systems and reporting.

Specifically, you will:

  • Own financial analysis and reporting. Lead the oversight and analysis of significant balances, transactions, estimates and variances; challenge assumptions and data quality, assess whether results are reasonable and complete; and connect balance sheet movements to the underlying activities, decisions and drivers across the Bank.
  • Exercise accounting judgment. Research and assess complex or non-standard transactions, recommend appropriate treatment under IFRS, PSAS and Bank policies, and consider the impacts across financial statement line items, systems and reporting processes when developing and documenting conclusions.
  • Safeguard financial control and account integrity. Oversee key reconciliations and controls; assess material or persistent differences, determine appropriate resolution or escalation, and identify issues or dependencies that could affect the completeness, accuracy and integrity of financial information.
  • Lead the resolution of complex accounting and operational issues. Investigate issues spanning Bank operations, accounting processes and systems, identify root causes and downstream financial impacts, and work with internal and external partners to implement sustainable solutions.
  • Drive modernization and continuous improvement. Identify opportunities, define accounting and business requirements, and support the design, testing and implementation of process and system changes, including assessing broader accounting, system and financial reporting impacts and dependencies across the Bank.
  • Develop and maintain accounting documentation. Maintain documentation of key accounting procedures, business rules and system integrations, ensuring it reflects procedural and system changes and preserves critical accounting knowledge.
  • Provide expertise, guidance and advice. Act as a senior subject-matter resource to colleagues and stakeholders, bringing a broad understanding of the Bank’s activities and their accounting and financial reporting implications to complex issues, providing technical guidance and coaching, and representing Accounting Operations’ requirements and perspectives.

What you need to succeed

We are looking for someone who:

  • Demonstrates strong analytical skills and professional judgment, with the ability to assess complex issues, challenge assumptions, evaluate risk and materiality, draw sound conclusions, and recommend practical solutions.
  • Demonstrates strong data literacy, using financial systems, analytical tools and structured data to evaluate results, identify relationships and trends, and support decision-making.
  • Has strong and broad accounting knowledge and experience, including accounting operations, financial close and reporting, reconciliations, internal controls, and the practical application of IFRS and/or PSAS, with the ability to understand significant financial statement line items and the activities across the Bank that drive them.
  • Thinks beyond individual accounts and processes, understanding how Bank activities, transactions, financial statement line items, systems and accounting processes are interconnected, and assessing the broader financial reporting implications of changes, issues and decisions.
  • Works independently and demonstrates initiative, proactively identifying issues, seeking the right information, managing competing priorities and delivering high-quality work within established timelines.
Communicates complex information clearly and effectively, using strong listening skills and adapting accounting, financial and system information for technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Builds strong collaborative relationships, bringing together different perspectives, providing constructive challenge and influencing stakeholders to resolve issues and achieve shared outcomes.
  • Builds capability and improves ways of working, sharing expertise, providing technical guidance and coaching, and identifying opportunities to strengthen processes, systems and team knowledge.

Nice to have

  • Experience in accounting operations or financial reporting within a financial institution, central bank, investment organization or similarly complex environment.
  • Knowledge of financial instruments, including valuation, amortization, income recognition, foreign exchange and related accounting considerations.
  • Experience with SAP, Blackline, portfolio or custody platforms, and data analytics or visualization tools such as Microsoft Fabric or Power BI.
  • Experience assessing and documenting internal controls and supporting internal or external audits.
  • Experience supporting significant system or business change, including business requirements, user acceptance testing and implementation.
