Software development is changing quickly, and we're looking for an experienced developer who is excited to help us evolve with it.

As a Senior Application Developer, you will design, build, integrate, and support software solutions that help Bangor Savings Bank serve its customers and employees. You'll tackle complex technical problems, partner with business and technology teams, and help shape solutions that are secure, reliable, maintainable, and practical.

Strong software engineering skills are essential, but technical ability alone isn't enough. We're looking for someone who fits the culture of Bangor Savings Bank: someone who is collaborative, curious, accountable, customer-focused, and able to build strong relationships.

Artificial intelligence is changing how software is designed and built. We're early in that journey, and we're looking for someone who can combine proven engineering practices with thoughtful use of AI-assisted and agentic development tools. You don't need to be an AI or machine-learning specialist. You do need to be curious, adaptable, willing to experiment, and able to distinguish useful capabilities from hype.

Just as importantly, you'll help other developers explore these changes at their own pace, sharing what works, listening to concerns, and helping the team learn together.

Work Location: This position is based in Bangor, Maine, with an expectation of working on-site at least three days per week to support collaboration, mentoring, and knowledge sharing.

What You'll Do

  • Design, develop, test, integrate, deploy, maintain, and support secure and reliable software solutions.
  • Independently take complex application and integration work from requirements through implementation and production support.
  • Translate business needs into technical requirements and practical solution designs, identifying dependencies, tradeoffs, and risks.
  • Work with APIs, databases, integrations, services, user interfaces, automation, and cloud technologies.
  • Troubleshoot complex application and production issues and pursue durable solutions.
  • Use AI-assisted development tools for coding, analysis, debugging, testing, refactoring, documentation, and solution design.
  • Use coding agents and emerging agentic development techniques where they add value, while maintaining human accountability for the final solution.
  • Critically review and validate AI-generated solutions for correctness, security, maintainability, and alignment with business requirements.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies based on their usefulness, reliability, security, cost, and fit for the Bank.
  • Mentor other developers through code review, pairing, technical discussions, and knowledge sharing.
  • Help teammates build confidence with evolving development practices while recognizing different levels of experience and comfort with AI.
  • Represent Application Development on projects and clearly communicate technical concepts, alternatives, risks, and tradeoffs.

Must Haves

  • Significant professional experience designing, developing, testing, deploying, and supporting production software, typically gained through 5+ years of software development experience.
  • Strong software engineering fundamentals, including application design, APIs and integrations, databases, source control, testing, debugging, and code review.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently deliver complex software solutions and work effectively with incomplete or ambiguous requirements.
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills and the ability to translate business requirements into practical technical solutions.
  • Experience working within a structured software development lifecycle.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills with both technical and nontechnical audiences.
  • Experience mentoring or providing technical guidance to other developers.
  • Practical experience using AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, Cursor, or comparable tools.
  • Ability to critically review, test, and validate AI-generated code rather than accepting generated output at face value.
  • Understanding of the security, privacy, quality, and maintainability considerations associated with AI-assisted development.
  • Strong alignment with Bangor Savings Bank's culture and values, demonstrated through a collaborative, respectful, accountable, and customer-focused approach. You build trust, value different perspectives, and contribute positively to the teams you work with.
  • Ability to introduce and advocate for change without dismissing existing experience or differing perspectives, particularly as our team explores AI-assisted development and new ways of working.
  • Curiosity, adaptability, humility, and a commitment to continuous learning as software engineering evolves.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience.

Nice to Haves

  • Experience with C#/.NET and modern web or service development.
  • Experience designing and consuming REST APIs and enterprise integrations.
  • Experience with relational databases and SQL.
  • Experience with Microsoft Azure or another major cloud platform.
  • Experience with CI/CD, DevOps practices, and Docker.
  • Experience using coding agents beyond basic code completion or building agentic workflows.
  • Familiarity with concepts such as LLM APIs, tool calling, RAG, agent orchestration, Model Context Protocol (MCP), AI evaluation, or AI observability.
  • Experience working in financial services or another security-conscious, regulated environment.

What Success Looks Like

Success in this role isn't measured simply by how much code you write. It's about understanding the problem, making sound technical decisions, using the best tools available, and taking responsibility for the outcome.

We're looking for someone who combines strong engineering judgment with curiosity about where the profession is heading. You know when AI can accelerate the work and when human judgment matters more. You share knowledge, listen to concerns, encourage thoughtful experimentation, and respect the experience others already bring to the team.

Success also means becoming a trusted and collaborative member of the team. You build strong working relationships, contribute to shared goals, ask for and offer help, give and receive feedback constructively, and recognize that the best solutions are rarely the work of one person. You make the team stronger not only through your technical expertise, but through how you work with others.

AI doesn't replace strong software engineering. We believe it makes strong software engineering more important than ever.
