Department Summary:
Why choose between doing meaningful work and having a fulfilling life? At MITRE, you can have both. That's because MITRE people are committed to tackling our nation's toughest challenges—and we're committed to the long-term well-being of our employees. MITRE is different from most technology companies. We are a not-for-profit corporation chartered to work for the public interest, with no commercial conflicts to influence what we do. The R&D centers we operate for the government create lasting impact in fields as diverse as cybersecurity, healthcare, aviation, defense, and enterprise transformation. We're making a difference every day—working for a safer, healthier, and more secure nation and world. Our workplace reflects our values. We offer competitive benefits, exceptional professional development opportunities for career growth, and a culture of innovation that embraces adaptability, collaboration, technical excellence, and people in partnership. If this sounds like the choice you want to make, then choose MITRE - and make a difference with us.
MITRE’s Multi-INT AI Engineering Department brings together the deep technical knowledge needed to develop new capabilities and the critical domain knowledge needed to shape them for multiple sponsor missions. That combination gives us the depth and breadth to thrive in mission-focused research and development and science and technology organizations. It also reflects the credibility we have earned with sponsors through work spanning research, analysis, prototyping, test, and evaluation. We draw on all these strengths to turn promising ideas into capabilities that serve real mission needs.
We seek motivated people with experience in artificial intelligence (AI), software development, and cloud engineering experience who want to apply their skills to meaningful mission challenges. Our teams bring together sensors, AI and machine learning (ML), and data engineering to exploit multimodal data. This includes remote sensing data collected using infrared imagery (OPIR), hyperspectral imagery (HSI), radar (SAR/GMTI), full motion video (FMV), Wide Are Motion Imagery (WAMI), and 3D data from a range of sources.
Roles & Responsibilities:
- Independently develop and integrate prototype capabilities that combine software, data processing, cloud components, and AI methods; apply engineering practices that make them reproducible, testable, and usable by MITRE and sponsor teams.
- Assess and adapt research from academia and industry to challenging sponsor data and mission problems.
- Design data ingestion, normalization, and ETL workflows for multimodal data; analyze data from multiple mission sources and identify limitations that affect findings.
- Select AI methods for mission problems and design experiments to evaluate their performance under sponsor-relevant conditions.
- Define and execute technical studies, including hypothesis development, experiment design, implementation, and evaluation.
- Work with technical and mission staff to understand sponsor constraints, discuss key issues, and identify capability gaps.
- Document and explain technical approaches, findings, limitations, and recommendations for transition or further investment.
- Guide project tasks when appropriate, share advanced knowledge, and help grow team capability.
Basic Qualifications:
- Typically requires a minimum of 5 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 3 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with relevant experience who can immediately contribute at this job step; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.
- Advanced Python and software engineering skills, including experience independently designing, testing, and integrating components into working AI prototypes.
- Hands-on experience developing and deploying capabilities in cloud environments using containers, automated deployment, or infrastructure as code.
- Experience building multimodal data pipelines and evaluating AI methods with multimodal data.
- Familiarity with multi-INT workflows and the data access, security, and operational constraints that affect mission work.
- Ability to learn independently and solve complex technical problems using sound judgment and multiple sources of information.
- Ability to collaborate with mission and technical staff, communicate findings to varied audiences, and guide project tasks when appropriate.
- Must have an active Top Secret/SCI with polygraph U.S Government issued Security Clearance. Per the U.S. Government’s eligibility requirements, you must be a U.S Citizen to be considered for a security clearance.
- This position requires a minimum of 3 days per week on-site.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Advanced degree in computer science, engineering, or related disciplines.
- Experience fusing mission data types, such as GEOINT, OSINT, and imagery, and assessing how each source affects technical findings.
- Experience building mission focused test and evaluation harnesses for AI tools using mission data.
- Experience fine-tuning, deploying, or evaluating large language model and agentic AI application, including through restricted computing environments.
- Familiarity with government acquisition processes, including an Analysis of Alternatives or other studies that inform sponsor decisions.
