Firm Description
Carroll Lawyers is a specialist disputes and advisory firm that helps clients navigate complex legal, commercial and reputational challenges both at home and internationally. We act for executives, professionals, businesses and individuals.
We practice law as chess, not checkers. We see our task as not simply making the next move, but as anticipating the moves that follow, to understand the options they create for both sides and to position our clients accordingly. We do not generate legal work for its own sake. Every step should serve a purpose and advance the client's interests, whether through negotiation, litigation, regulatory engagement or commercial resolution.
Our work is varied, spanning employment law, regulatory investigations, professional discipline matters, commercial disputes, reputation protection, defamation and international arbitration. We are a laid-back but high-achieving firm. We value precision, intellectual curiosity, independent thought and lawyers who see through the immediate legal issue to get to what is really at stake.
Senior Associate
Greater Sydney Area | Full-Time
Role Description
We are looking for a Senior Associate who wants to do more than process files and advise on the law. We want someone who can take a problem, work out what matters, develop a strategy and drive it forward.
You will manage matters from inception to resolution, work directly with clients, develop litigation and negotiation strategies, draft substantive court documents and submissions, and undertake advocacy in courts and tribunals. You will also assist with regulatory investigations, mediations and other dispute resolution processes, as appropriate.
You will work closely with the Principal on significant matters while having the independence to run your own files, exercise judgment and take responsibility for the decisions that shape their progress. Client contact will be substantial, and your contribution will extend beyond legal analysis to the practical and commercial consequences of the advice you give.
Key responsibilities include:
- Run matters from the initial instructions through to resolution, keeping both the immediate issues and the endgame in view.
- Develop and execute litigation, regulatory and commercial strategies, anticipating the other side's likely moves and preparing accordingly.
- Draft advice, pleadings, submissions, correspondence and settlement documents that are precise, persuasive and directed towards a clear objective.
- Conduct negotiations and dispute resolution processes with a clear understanding of the client's priorities and alternatives.
- Prepare for and appear at hearings, mediations and conferences, where appropriate.
- Identify legal and commercial risks, explain the available options and help clients make informed decisions.
- Build strong working relationships with clients through sound judgment, clear communication and reliable follow-through.
- Supervise and mentor junior lawyers and support staff, contributing to the quality of the work and the development of the team.
- Contribute ideas, identify opportunities and help develop the firm's practice.
This role requires an exceptional lawyer who can combine technical skills with commercial judgment and a genuine commitment to securing the best outcomes for clients.
Qualifications and Experience
We are seeking a lawyer with approximately 3–5 years' post-admission experience who is comfortable taking on responsibility and wants to develop further as a strategist, advocate and adviser.
You should bring:
- Substantial experience in litigation, dispute resolution and legal advisory work.
- The ability to manage matters independently, identify the issues that will determine their outcome and decide where effort is best directed.
- Strong drafting and written advocacy skills, with an eye for detail and an appreciation of the bigger picture.
- Confidence dealing directly with clients and explaining complex issues in clear, practical terms.
- The judgment to distinguish what is legally possible from what is commercially sensible.
- Experience appearing in courts or tribunals, and involvement in mediations or regulatory processes.
- The organisational discipline to manage competing matters, deadlines and priorities without losing sight of the details.
- A willingness to share knowledge, mentor junior colleagues and contribute to a team.
- An interest in developing client relationships and helping build a practice.
Experience in international arbitration, particularly under the rules of the ICC, LCIA or DIAC, will be highly regarded.
We are interested in how you think, not just what you have done. We value lawyers who question assumptions, identify the pressure points in a case and consider the consequences of each available move.
Technical knowledge matters, but so does knowing when to press a point, when to compromise and when a different approach will better serve the client.
What the role offers
- Work across a varied practice, with exposure to significant disputes and strategically demanding matters.
- Direct collaboration with the Principal and involvement in important decisions about case strategy.
- Meaningful responsibility, substantial client contact and the freedom to exercise professional judgment.
- Flexible working arrangements, including the ability to work remotely for a substantial part of the week.
- The opportunity to work on matters that require more than routine application of the law.
- A workplace that is relaxed in manner but serious about the quality of its work.
- Recognition for initiative, sound judgment, contribution and the value you bring to the practice.
How we think
We appreciate directness, intellectual honesty and a willingness to take ownership of difficult questions. We value lawyers who constantly ask, not where our opponents are, but where they are heading – and are already there to meet them.
