Job Description

Senior Associate / Team Leader │ Personal Injury (Plaintiff)
5+ Years PQE │ Sydney CBD, NSW

About Our Client
Our client is an established and growing Sydney CBD law firm with a strong plaintiff personal injury practice. It acts only for injured people, mainly in CTP motor vehicle and workers compensation matters.

The firm has a dedicated compensation team that includes experienced senior practitioners and Accredited Personal Injury Specialists. It has built a strong reputation for client service, technical expertise and results for its clients.

The Opportunity
Our client is looking for a Senior Associate to lead a team within its compensation practice. The role combines your own practice with team leadership.

You'll run a personal file load of about 50 to 70 matters, mostly CTP and workers compensation. You'll also supervise a team of four junior lawyers, who between them manage more than 200 files.

This role suits a Senior Associate who is already running a busy compensation practice and wants formal responsibility for developing a team, or an experienced Associate ready to take that step.

Your work will include:

  • Managing NSW CTP and workers compensation claims from first instructions through to resolution
  • Advising clients on statutory benefits, weekly payments, medical and treatment expenses and permanent impairment
  • Reviewing insurer dispute notices and internal review decisions, and setting strategy on disputed claims
  • Preparing and running matters before the Personal Injury Commission
  • Preparing Independent Review Office funding applications for workers compensation matters
  • Briefing medico-legal experts and counsel
  • Conducting settlement negotiations and appearing at conciliations, conferences and mediations
  • Supervising and mentoring four junior lawyers, including file reviews, case strategy and help on complex or disputed matters
  • Monitoring progress across the team's files so matters move forward and deadlines are met

Key Details

  • Practice split: mostly CTP and workers compensation
  • Personal file load: about 50 to 70 matters
  • Team: four junior lawyers who between them manage more than 200 files
  • Reporting line: [TBC]
  • Remuneration: $150,000 to $180,000 depending on experience [plus super / package, TBC], plus incentive opportunities

About You

  • 5+ years' PQE in plaintiff personal injury, admitted in NSW
  • Solid experience in both NSW CTP and workers compensation
  • A working knowledge of the relevant NSW legislation and the PIC process
  • Experience handling disputes about weekly benefits, medical expenses and permanent impairment
  • Experience supervising or mentoring junior lawyers, or clearly ready to step into a team leadership role
  • Strong file management skills, with the ability to keep a personal practice moving while overseeing a team
  • Confident dealing with clients, insurers, doctors, experts and counsel
  • Accreditation as a Personal Injury Specialist, or working towards it, will be well regarded

What's on Offer

  • A formal team leadership role with a personal practice alongside it
  • Close work with experienced practitioners and Accredited Personal Injury Specialists
  • A clear pathway for career progression
  • Hybrid working arrangements
  • Ongoing professional development and CPD support
  • A supportive, collaborative team
