The Alta Video engineering team integrates intelligent capabilities into security solutions. We help organizations see, understand, and act on their surroundings to protect people, businesses, and communities in real-time.

We are seeking Senior Back End Engineers with backend development experience to expand our team and help shape our core product development.

What You Will Do

The Edinburgh team works with the latest video security cameras from Motorola Solutions to add new end to end features in the Alta Video solution. From one month to the next, you may be allowing customers to configure the latest analytics (such as PPE detection) or dewarping video from 360 degree fisheye devices for example.

As a Backend Engineer, you will contribute to designing, building, and maintaining our backend ecosystem. In this role, you will:

Design & Build: Develop resilient backend services and distributed APIs that ingest, process, and manage streaming video and real-time sensor data.
Scale & Improve: Enhance system performance, optimize throughput, and ensure high availability across multi-region cloud deployments.
Continuous Delivery: Work with modern CI/CD pipelines and deployment tooling to enable smooth, reliable software releases.
Security & Quality: Help maintain security best practices, participate in code reviews, and build automated testing across our codebase.
Collaborative Ownership: Partner within a cross-functional agile team—working closely with firmware, frontend, and QA specialists to influence feature direction.

Basic Requirements

What We’re Looking For

Programming Skills: Strong foundational skills in at least one general-purpose programming language (such as Golang, Python, C, C++, Rust, or Java).
Software Development Background: Demonstrated industry experience as a Software Engineer building and maintaining backend services.
Cloud & Distributed Systems: Experience developing backend microservices for cloud environments (GCP preferred).
Modern Tooling: Familiarity with or interest in using AI-assisted tools within a modern development workflow.
Product Mindset: A passion for building reliable software experiences that deliver real value to end-users.
Background: A degree in Computer Science / Software Engineering (or an equivalent field) OR a proven track record of practical software engineering experience.
Location & Collaboration: Ability to join us in-person at our Edinburgh city centre office 2 days per week.

Bonus Points (Nice to Have, Not Required)

Understanding of service-oriented architecture (SOA) and building cloud-native products.
Exposure to Machine Learning, Computer Vision, or AI concepts.
A desire to develop a well-rounded technical skill set combining backend depth with broader architectural curiosity.
Language Flexibility: Our backend services primarily default to Go (and TypeScript for frontend). Prior Go experience is not required—we welcome engineers who are excited to learn new languages and tech stacks on the job!
