About this role

At Yubo, our backend powers a social discovery platform used by millions of people worldwide, handling large volumes of user interactions and real-time events every day. And as we continue to evolve our product, we're looking to strengthen the foundations that make all of this possible.

We're looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to join our Backend Experience team.

You'll initially work alongside other Backend Engineers on some of our biggest technical challenges: modernizing a codebase shaped by years of fast iteration, improving reliability and scalability, and building the foundations that will help us ship faster and more safely.

As our organization evolves, you'll also take ownership of the backend for a cross-functional product area, working closely with Product, Design, and Mobile Engineering to deliver impactful features to millions of users.

This role is particularly well suited to someone who enjoys solving complex technical problems, challenging existing architecture, and balancing engineering excellence with product impact.

Your responsibilities

• Design and deliver scalable, resilient and cost-efficient backend services, APIs and event-driven systems

• Contribute to modernizing our codebase

• Investigate complex production issues using logs, metrics and traces, and turn recurring problems into long-term improvements

• Contribute to major technical initiatives, including event tracking improvements and the backend evolution supporting our rebranding

• Drive technical discussions and RFCs, making pragmatic trade-offs between delivery speed, quality and maintainability

• Partner with Product, Design and Mobile Engineering to translate product needs into reliable backend solutions

• Mentor teammates through code reviews, pair programming and knowledge sharing

• Improve documentation, engineering standards and onboarding practices to make the team more effective

Our technical environment / Tools we use

• Backend: Node.js & TypeScript

• Architecture: Event-driven systems

• Observability: Logs, metrics, traces and performance monitoring

• Engineering practices: RFCs, code reviews, pair programming, automated testing

• Codebase evolution: TypeScript migration, modularization, monorepo

Who you are

• You have 5+ years of backend engineering experience, ideally in a startup or scale-up environment

• You have strong experience with Node.js and TypeScript

• You are comfortable designing and maintaining APIs and event-driven systems

• You understand the challenges of building scalable, reliable and cost-efficient systems

• You have strong debugging skills and enjoy solving complex production issues

• You apply solid engineering practices while remaining pragmatic about delivery

• You can challenge architectural decisions, explain trade-offs and contribute to technical discussions

• You have a product mindset and enjoy collaborating with Product, Design and Engineering teams

• You enjoy sharing knowledge and helping other engineers grow

• You are comfortable working in an environment where priorities and technical challenges evolve

In your first 6 months, you will

• Contribute to meaningful backend roadmap initiatives that improve the reliability, scalability and maintainability of our systems

• Own the backend delivery of a new product feature end-to-end, working with Product Design and Mobile Engineering to define technical trade-offs and a clear delivery plan

• Identify and propose a concrete improvement to our backend architecture, codebase or engineering practices, bringing it from initial assessment to team alignment and a documented RFC

• Help strengthen the team's engineering standards and ability to deliver high-quality product experiences at scale
