Job Description
Senior Backend Engineer, Partner Integrations, PHP Symfony
A fantastic opportunity for a Senior Backend Engineer to join a growing, integration-led SaaS company. This is a hands-on role for a true integration engineer who has repeatedly built and maintained connections with different external partners, rather than a general product engineer who has only occasionally connected third-party services. You will use PHP and Symfony to develop a portfolio of production integrations while also contributing to the company’s AWS infrastructure.
Location: Fully remote within the UK, although ideally you will be based near London. You must be available to travel to London for occasional team meetings and start work at 8:30am UK time.
Salary: £55,000 - £70,000 per annum. Additional paid weekend on-call rota, performance bonus and share options.
Requirements for Senior Backend Engineer, Partner Integrations:
- Strong commercial experience developing production backend systems using PHP
- Commercial Symfony experience within production applications or services
- Proven experience personally building and maintaining multiple integrations with different external partners
- Experience taking integrations through development, testing, launch and ongoing production support
- Strong understanding of REST APIs, webhooks, OAuth, rate limiting, retries, idempotency, queues and asynchronous processing
- Experience building connectors, adapters or transformation layers between different external systems
- Experience monitoring production integrations and investigating failures involving both internal and partner systems
- Meaningful production AWS experience, including containers, monitoring, infrastructure as code and incident response
- Strong understanding of automated testing, code quality and CI/CD practices
- Comfortable adapting integrations when partners change their APIs, schemas, credentials or platform behaviour
- Experience working autonomously within a startup, scale-up, SME or small product engineering team
- A pragmatic approach to engineering, with the ability to balance technical quality against commercial delivery requirements
- Comfortable taking long-term ownership of integrations after launch
- Experience within payments, travel technology, marketplaces, hospitality, accounting software, logistics, e-commerce, martech or another integration-heavy SaaS environment would be beneficial
- Must be based in the UK with existing right to work. Visa sponsorship is not available
Responsibilities for Senior Backend Engineer, Partner Integrations:
- Design, build and maintain a portfolio of integrations with external software platforms
- Develop partner-specific connectors using PHP and Symfony
- Translate different external data structures and behaviours into reliable internal formats
- Take integrations through development, sandbox testing, launch and ongoing support
- Maintain existing integrations as external APIs, schemas and authentication requirements change
- Investigate production failures across internal services and third-party platforms
- Build reliable integration workflows using webhooks, queues and asynchronous processing
- Develop backend platform and API features across a microservices-based environment
- Improve automated testing, observability and CI/CD quality gates
- Contribute to the operation and development of the company’s AWS infrastructure
- Participate in a paid weekend on-call rota supporting urgent integration issues
- Contribute informed opinions to technical and architectural decisions as the platform grows
