About the Role

Working within the Digital Services engineering team and reporting to the Head of Digital Services, you will play a key role in designing and delivering the backend tier for Xoople’s web-based products and services. You will transform proprietary Earth observation data into resilient, scalable services, helping shape products from initial definition through commercialisation and scale-up in close partnership with cloud, data, frontend and DevOps teams. As the team evolves, the role may grow to co-lead selected technical initiatives.

Impact You Own

  • Partner on the architecture and design of backend services and the persistence layer, contributing to solutions that are scalable, secure and maintainable.

  • Design, develop and maintain robust REST APIs and server-side logic that make Xoople’s proprietary Earth observation data accessible to internal and external consumers.

  • Help shape technical direction and strengthen engineering best practices across Python, FastAPI and database technologies.

  • Provide technical insight to inform cloud and software architecture, strategic technology choices and solution design across the platform.

  • Partner with UX/UI, cloud, data, frontend and DevOps teams to integrate backend services with Databricks and Microsoft Fabric and deliver high-quality releases.

  • Support the software lifecycle and cloud deployments, troubleshoot production issues, and keep the backend stack current and reliable.

What We’re Looking For

  • 6+ years of experience in web software development, with a strong focus on backend engineering and architectural responsibility.

  • Deep knowledge of Python and FastAPI, including building asynchronous REST APIs with Pydantic and SQLAlchemy 2.0.

  • Proven experience building scalable, highly available cloud-native systems, REST APIs and microservices using relational and non-relational databases.

  • Strong command of layered and hexagonal (ports-and-adapters) architecture, SOLID principles, dependency injection and distributed systems concepts such as idempotency, concurrency control, saga/outbox and asynchronous processing.

  • Security-conscious engineering approach, including OWASP Top 10 awareness, role- and scope-based authorization and identity integration (OAuth2/OIDC, Entra ID).

  • Hands-on testing experience across unit and integration levels, together with containers, CI/CD (GitHub Actions) and infrastructure as code (Terraform/Terragrunt).

  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving and communication skills in English and Spanish.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field; a master's degree is valued.

What Makes You Stand Out

Experience with Azure services such as Container Apps, Key Vault, Entra ID, API Management, Storage Accounts, Application Insights, Log Analytics, Monitor or OpenTelemetry; PostgreSQL in production, including versioned SQL migrations (e.g., Atlas) and exposure to Databricks Lakebase; the modern Python toolchain (uv, ruff, static type checking, pytest); API design standards such as RFC 9457 problem details, keyset pagination and OpenAPI; familiarity with API client tooling and monorepo task runners; relevant web-development certifications; or experience working with imagery data.
