Senior Business Analyst
Full-time
Hybrid (at least 3 days per week on-site in Bloomsbury, London)
Fixed term (23 months)
£51,623 per annum
Application deadline: 23:59 on Sunday, 15 November
About the role
The British Museum operates within a complex and evolving technology landscape. As Senior Business Analyst, you will operate as an experienced internal consultant at the intersection of business need, technical design and technology strategy. Working primarily on the replacement of the Museum’s Environmental Monitoring System (EMS), you will help keep systems, processes and data aligned with changing organisational needs while avoiding unnecessary technical debt.
You will steer complex discovery and analysis, bringing clarity to large problem spaces and translating organisational challenges into well-considered interventions. These may include redesigning business processes, reconfiguring existing platforms, defining integrations and targeted customisations, or introducing new technologies where they add clear value. You will also bring knowledge of business analysis tools, techniques and best practice, strengthening team standards, improving consistency and supporting less experienced analysts.
Working with senior stakeholders, governance boards, technical and compliance teams, and external suppliers, you will develop robust options and recommendations that enable confident decisions. Your analysis and designs will have genuine scope to shape major project decisions and delivery, while ensuring solutions align with enterprise architecture principles, statutory obligations and the Museum’s long-term direction.
About you
- Demonstrable experience in a Business/Systems/Operations Analyst, Product Manager, Consultant or similar role in an IS / IT environment, using formal business analysis methodologies.
- Strong analytical capability, with experience interpreting complex stakeholder needs, translating them into application and operational requirements, and developing clear, actionable recommendations.
- Experience co-ordinating analysis across medium to large projects with a wide range of stakeholder groups and suppliers, managing competing priorities and deadlines.
- Excellent influencing, facilitation and communication skills, including the confidence to question constructively, engage senior decision-makers and use visual models to build shared understanding.
- A strategic and collaborative approach, with excellent knowledge of business analysis tools, techniques and best practice to improve standards, strengthen consistency and support less experienced analysts.
- Previous experience working with Environmental Monitoring Systems or large-scale projects involving IT infrastructure as a business analyst is advantageous but not essential.
Key areas of responsibility
- Manage discovery and requirements activity for large, complex problem spaces, with a primary focus on the replacement of the Museum’s Environmental Monitoring System, documenting current and target states and managing requirements through procurement and project delivery.
- Analyse business systems and evaluate solution options across processes, platforms, infrastructure, integrations, customisation and new technology, translating business needs into viable application and operational requirements.
- Provide clear, evidence-based recommendations to senior stakeholders and Museum boards, balancing differing departmental needs with organisational strategy, statutory obligations and enterprise architecture principles.
- Co-ordinate multiple medium to extra-large projects and workstreams involving large stakeholder groups and external suppliers, planning workload, forecasting effort and managing conflicting timelines.
- Strengthen the Museum’s business analysis practice by contributing expertise to standards and processes, guiding others to innovate and improve, and supporting less experienced analysts to develop their capability.
The Masterplan
The British Museum is undertaking its biggest transformation since its founding nearly 300 years ago. This physical and intellectual transformation includes large scale building and gallery transformation, new ways of connecting with audiences and different ways of working. As we look towards this exciting future, we remain guided by the words of our founder Hans Sloane - who dreamed of a museum connecting all arts and sciences, which would be accessible to everyone, everywhere.
