Role: Senior Cloud Infrastructure Engineer (Azure)

Company: Worldpanel by Numerator

Location: Bogota, Colombia - Remote

We are seeking a highly experienced Cloud Infrastructure Engineer to own the reliability, performance, and capacity of our growing Azure virtual machine estate. The ideal candidate brings a strong automation mindset to keep our environment patched, backed up, monitored, and recoverable, proactively solving problems through code and eliminating repetitive manual tasks.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Own the health and reliability of our Azure VM estate (predominantly Windows with a growing Linux footprint), scaling from 60 to 300+ VMs.
  • Manage patching and updates with Azure Update Manager, ensuring compliance, handling maintenance windows, and managing applications that require version pinning.
  • Drive backup and disaster recovery using Azure Backup and Azure Site Recovery, including mandatory regular restore testing.
  • Build robust monitoring and alerting using Azure Monitor and KQL (Kusto Query Language), focusing on auto-remediation so known issues fix themselves.
  • Automate VM lifecycle operations (provisioning, configuration, decommissioning) utilizing Terraform and advanced scripting.
  • Manage incidents affecting the VM estate, conduct deep root cause analysis, and resolve underlying problem classes rather than just isolated instances.
  • Troubleshoot complex issues, including diagnosing when security tooling (e.g., Antivirus/EDR) is the actual root cause of an application failure.
  • Collaborate with the security team on investigations by pulling logs and access history, ensuring systems are cleared before remediation or box restarts.
  • Reduce operational toil by identifying manual work and building automated solutions, while maintaining clear runbooks and operational standards.

Qualifications:

  • 8–10 years of experience in SRE, systems engineering, or infrastructure operations, featuring deep administration skills in Windows Server and a solid working knowledge of Linux.
  • Proven track record running VM estates on Azure at scale, including hands-on experience with Azure Update Manager, Azure Backup, Site Recovery, and Azure Monitor.
  • Strong practical experience managing infrastructure as code (IaC) with Terraform.
  • Hands-on expertise with KQL for Log Analytics queries and alert logic.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of Azure DevOps and GitHub, encompassing CI/CD pipelines and release practices.
  • Strong scripting proficiency in PowerShell and Bash.
  • Familiarity with endpoint security/antivirus tooling (e.g., Microsoft Defender) and Linux package management (apt/yum), including version holding/pinning and rollback procedures.
  • Experience operating within enterprise-scale projects alongside distributed teams, and familiarity with AI agents or AI-assisted engineering workflows.
  • Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field; relevant Microsoft Azure certifications (e.g., AZ-104 Azure Administrator Associate).

Profile & Competencies:

  • Automation-Driven: Refuses to do the same manual task twice, preferring to solve problems permanently through Terraform and scripting.
  • Accountable Owner: Takes end-to-end responsibility for the Azure infrastructure, believing a backup is only valid if it has been successfully test-restored.
  • Investigative Problem Solver: Looks beyond the surface during incidents, capable of differentiating between genuine application faults and security tooling interventions.
  • Security-Minded Partner: Comfortably assists with security-led investigations and log reviews without needing to be a dedicated security specialist.
  • Autonomous Collaborator: Capable of owning complex challenges independently while communicating clearly with distributed, multicultural teams.
