Role Purpose:

We are seeking an experienced Senior Platform Engineer to join our multifunctional Cloud Platform Team as a senior individual contributor responsible for executing complex technical delivery and providing healthy challenge to architectural and delivery approaches.

As Senior Platform Engineer, you are the "show me the code" voice - the experienced engineer who validates feasibility through execution, challenges designs with implementation reality, and delivers platform capabilities with excellence. You work alongside Cloud Architects and Technical Leads as a peer contributor, bringing deep hands-on expertise and delivery experience that grounds decision-making in practical reality.

This is a senior IC role, not a leadership position - you lead through expertise, execution quality, and constructive challenge. You own complex technical problems, mentor through pairing, and set the standard for what great delivery looks like.

Role Responsibilities:

Hands-On Technical Delivery

• Own and deliver the most complex, risky, or ambiguous technical challenges
• Implement infrastructure-as-code (Terraform): networking, security, governance, compute, PaaS - modules, stacks, policies
• Build CI/CD pipelines, automation scripts, self-service tooling, and observability infrastructure
• Write comprehensive tests (unit, integration, validation) and documentation (runbooks, diagrams, implementation notes)
• Troubleshoot complex issues spanning networking, identity, security, and infrastructure layers
• Optimize implementations for performance, cost, security, and maintainability - secure-by-design in every delivery
• Participate in on-call rotation and lead incident response for critical platform issues

Healthy Challenge & Technical Validation

• Challenge architectural designs with implementation reality: "will this actually work?"
• Provide constructive pushback on approaches that ignore delivery constraints or compromise quality
• Validate technical feasibility during refinement - flag hidden complexity, dependencies, risks
• Push back on unrealistic timelines with data and experience - ground planning in delivery reality
• Propose alternative approaches based on hands-on experience: "I've tried that and here's what happened"
• Question standards and patterns to ensure they serve real needs - challenge both over-engineering and under-engineering
• Advocate for technical excellence while remaining pragmatic about business constraints

Collaborative Design & Refinement

• Participate in design sessions - contribute implementation insights to architectural discussions
• Review ADRs and design patterns for implement-ability - validate designs can be decomposed into stories
• Participate in refinement - help decompose features into implementable stories with clear acceptance criteria
• Validate story sizing, complexity estimates, and technical feasibility before "Ready" state
• Identify technical prerequisites, dependencies, missing context, or unclear requirements
• Conduct thorough code reviews: Terraform modules, Azure Policy definitions, pipeline configurations
• Provide mentorship through constructive review feedback - balance quality with pragmatic delivery

Knowledge Sharing & Mentorship

• Pair program with engineers - transfer knowledge hands-on during story implementation
• Demonstrate best practices through doing, not just telling - build confidence through guided problem-solving
• Share expertise through workshops, demos, and technical deep-dives
• Document complex implementations and troubleshooting approaches - contribute to knowledge base and playbooks

What We’re Looking For:

Essential Knowledge, Skills & Experience:

• 8+ years hands-on infrastructure engineering in cloud environments
• Expert-level Terraform at enterprise scale - 50+ production modules/stacks
• Deep Azure experience across networking, security, governance, compute, PaaS services
• Proven delivery of complex infrastructure in regulated industries (banking, financial services, healthcare, government)
• Agile/Kanban multifunctional team experience with architects, engineers, DevOps, security
• Track record of constructive challenge and proposing feasible alternatives
• Production troubleshooting experience resolving complex technical issues
• Mentorship experience through pairing and hands-on collaboration

Skills:

• Terraform: modules, state management, composable stacks, testing, patterns, anti-patterns
• Azure: VNets, NSGs, Firewall, private endpoints, ExpressRoute, VPN Gateway, Entra ID, RBAC, PIM, Key Vault, Policy, compute, PaaS (App Service, Functions, ACA, AKS)
• DevOps: CI/CD (Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions), Git workflows, testing frameworks, scripting (PowerShell, Bash, Python)
• Design patterns: Secure-by-design, IaC best practices, hub-and-spoke networking, observability, resilience, DR
• Microsoft ecosystem: M365, D365, Fabric, Power Platform integration patterns

Desirable Knowledge, Skills & Experience:

• Azure certifications (AZ-305, AZ-400)
• Azure Enterprise Scale Landing Zones
• Container orchestration (Kubernetes, ACA, AKS)
• API Management (APIM, Logic Apps, Event Grid), SRE or DevOps transformation
• Open-source contributions
• Multiple IaC tools (Bicep, Ansible)
• FinOps/cost optimization
• Security frameworks (ISO 27001, SOC2, NIST)

Education:

• Relevant degree desirable, or equivalent competencies in college.
