Position Description
We are seeking an HVAC Controls Engineer to design, implement, and validate control software used in various data center thermal management systems. You will own the entire controls lifecycle—from requirements and sequence-of-operations (SOO) through coding, simulation, lab testing, field commissioning, and release—focusing on reliability, uptime, energy efficiency, and Building Management System (BMS) integration.
Key Responsibilities
- Design & Development
- Develop, configure, and maintain control applications for Carel platforms (e.g., c.pCO family, pCO, pGD HMI) using Carel development tools (e.g., c.suite, 1tool, c.touch, c.web where applicable).
- Implement robust software for VFD control, EC condenser fans, electronic expansion valves, oil management, refrigerant leak mitigation, anti‑short-cycle protection, pump control, and capacity/temperature reset strategies.
- Build and maintain reusable control function blocks, alarms, trend logs, and diagnostics.
- Integration & Connectivity
- Define points lists, data models, and discovery/ alarming conventions; ensure cybersecurity-minded defaults (roles, passwords, ports).
- Implement commissioning and service workflows (HMI screens, parameter maps, trend sets, firmware update plans).
- Develop and validate BMS integrations using BACnet/IP, Modbus TCP, or other.
- Validation & Commissioning
- Create and execute test plans: SIL/HIL simulation, bench testing, and environmental chamber/low-ambient tests.
- Support factory acceptance tests (FAT) and site commissioning; diagnose and resolve control issues (tuning, sensors, wiring, EMI/grounding, network).
- Document release notes, fault trees, and service bulletins
- Field & Production Support
- Provide immediate and effective support to the production line and/or end-users to diagnose and solve controls issues. This support may be outside of typical business hours (nights and weekends)
- Work though 8D process to determine root cause, implement corrective action, and prevent recurrance.
- Quality & Process
- Maintain source code in the applicable version control system (SharePoint, Git, Jira, etc.)
- Contribute to requirements, SOO, FMEA, and hazard analysis; drive design for reliability (DFR) and design for service (DFS).
- Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, aftermarket, and product teams to ensure end-to-end system performance.
Required Education & Qualifications
-
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, or related field.
- 2+ years of full-time controls engineering experience desired. However, new graduates may be considered based on exceptional project work or previous employement.
- Experience with, or demonstrated knowledge of, HVAC systems, data center equipment, and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) equipment preferred.
- Familiarity with Industrial Control Panels, electrical troubleshooting, and typical industrial sensor types (pressure, temperature, flow, etc.)
- Working knowledge of IEC 61131-3 programming languages (Ladder Diagram, Function Block Diagram, Structured Text, etc.)
- Excellent analytical, documentation, and communication skills.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience with Carel controllers, specifically c.pCO product line.
- Experience with Distech controllers, specifically ECY-S1000.
- Knowledge of industrial serial communication protocols, such as Modbus RTU, Modbus TCP, BACnet/IP, Ethernet/IP, EtherCAT, etc.
- Ability to safely and effectively use electrical test and measurement equipment to diagnose and solve controls issues.
- Working knowledge of Git (branching, reviews, tags, release management).
TRAVEL:
- Up to 20% to customer locations and various manufacturing locations, primarily in USA
