bp Supply Trading & Shipping (ST&S) is bp's energy trading division, responsible for the physical and financial trading of oil, refined products, biofuels, gas, power, LNG and low carbon fuels. It is a friendly, creative and dynamic organisation, and is bp's face to the traded energy markets.

We are seeking a Senior Counsel II for the Refining & Products Trading Europe & Africa team which supports the crude oil, refined products and biofuels trading benches and origination activities in Europe & Africa based from our hub in Canary Wharf, London together with our regional offices in Netherlands, Spain, Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa and Angola.

The successful candidate will be part of a diverse and collegiate team of 12 individuals. As a senior level leader, they will provide comprehensive strategic and solution-focused legal guidance on complex trading issues to assist BP in driving value and minimising its legal and reputational risks.

Activities within the team include day-to-day support for the operational aspects of physical commodity trading, lower carbon activities, term deals for supply and purchase contracts of oil and refined products, disputes; joint ventures, storage arrangements and new country access, anti-bribery and corruption, trade sanctions and competition law issues.

The legal team and trading business are extremely collaborative environments where individuals are focused on problem solving and reacting to the dynamics of the international energy markets. The work is highly varied and challenging, covering a range of activities from the North Sea to Southern Africa. Lawyers work autonomously on matters but with support from a diverse team and the wider BP Legal function, with an emphasis on sharing of know-how and expertise.

Requirements of the role:

• Qualified lawyer with significant post-qualification experience in commodity trading or analogous fields.
• Strong interpersonal skills – capable of adopting a variety of styles to interact with clients on the trading floor and senior management to achieve the desired result.
• Consistent track record as an effective team player with open communication and effective collaboration within ST&S, across Legal and other functions.
• Ability to prioritise conflicting demands, operate independently and effectively against short timelines and provide prompt and commercially focused advice.
• Strong problem-solving skills, with the creativity to propose different options and build consensus.
• Integrity, courage and sound ethical judgment.
