About the Role:

As a Senior Customer Engineer, you'll deliver Onyx's professional services: engagements that take customers past what the platform does on its own and leave them with a result they can measure. You'll report to the Director of Customer Engineering as one of the first hires on a new team.

Our largest customers bring us problems the product alone doesn't solve. Detections that need tuning to their environment. Agents they built themselves and need reviewed before launch. Finance asking what AI is costing them, and auditors asking for evidence of AI controls. That's the work we see today, alongside custom deployments, integrations, and automation for needs we haven't seen yet.

We're still defining which services we offer, and you'll help decide. Expect the work to change as we learn what customers need most. We're looking for a hands-on security practitioner who likes solving new problems and turning the answers into something repeatable.

What You'll Do:

• Deliver to a finished result. Take each engagement from kickoff to customer sign-off, with a clear definition of done and an outcome the customer can measure.
• Tune controls to each customer. Use real alert data to cut noise, build policies and detections that fit their environment, and hand them off documented so the customer can keep them tuned.
• Review what customers build. Assess the AI agents and MCP servers customers build themselves, and deliver findings and a remediation plan before they go live.
• Answer the hard questions. Build the analyses and evidence customers' finance and compliance teams need — where their AI spend goes, and how their controls map to the frameworks they're audited against.
• Build what doesn't exist yet, and make it repeatable. Take on custom deployments, integrations, and automation; turn what you build into tooling, templates, and methods the team reuses; and help shape which services Onyx offers and what "done" looks like for each.

Requirements

What You Bring:

• 5+ years in hands-on technical roles (professional services, security consulting, solutions or customer engineering, or similar) with enterprise customers, including taking scoped projects from start to finish.
• A security background, such as detection engineering, application security, security architecture, or cloud security.
• Strong scripting skills (Python or similar) and comfort with REST APIs, cloud platforms (AWS/Azure/GCP), and querying and analyzing logs and data (SQL or log query languages).
• Clear technical writing and communication, including findings and reports customers can act on.
• Comfort with ambiguity and an interest in building a new function.

Nice to Have:

• Experience with AI security — testing LLM applications, agents, or MCP servers — and with AI/ML platforms, LLM tooling, or agent frameworks.
• Background in SIEM or SOC work.
• Familiarity with security and AI governance frameworks (e.g., SOC 2, ISO 27001, NIST AI RMF, EU AI Act).
• Exposure to cloud or AI cost analysis.
• Relevant certifications (e.g., GIAC, cloud provider certifications).
