Employment Type: Full-Time

Work Arrangement: 100% Remote — Work From Home

About the Role

The Senior Cytology Specimen Screening Specialist supports the technical review, preliminary screening, quality assessment, and documentation of cytological specimens through secure digital pathology systems and remote laboratory workflows. The role focuses on reviewing digitised cytology slides, assessing cellular adequacy, identifying potentially significant morphological features, prioritising cases for further review, and maintaining accurate screening records.

Working remotely with cytotechnologists, cytopathologists, laboratory quality teams, and diagnostic service managers, the specialist contributes to consistent screening practices, timely case progression, and reliable quality assurance. This position is limited to remote technical screening and documentation support. Final diagnostic interpretation, reporting, clinical decisions, and regulated sign-offs must be completed by appropriately licensed and authorised cytopathologists or other designated professionals.

Key Responsibilities
  • Review digitised cytology slides and associated case documentation through approved remote pathology platforms.
  • Perform preliminary screening assessments within the specialist's authorised scope of practice and applicable laboratory procedures.
  • Examine cellular morphology, specimen adequacy, background characteristics, and documented preparation quality.
  • Identify potentially significant cellular abnormalities or suspicious morphological features for escalation to authorised diagnostic professionals.
  • Prioritise cases for further review based on approved screening protocols and established escalation criteria.
  • Review cytology specimen records for completeness, including patient identifiers, specimen source, collection details, and relevant clinical information.
  • Assess digitised slide quality, including focus, staining consistency, cellular distribution, and image completeness.
  • Document screening observations, technical concerns, case flags, and recommendations using approved laboratory information systems.
  • Identify cases requiring repeat digitisation, additional slide review, or clarification of specimen documentation.
  • Support quality checks of cytology screening records to improve consistency, traceability, and completeness.
  • Monitor screening workload, case turnaround indicators, pending reviews, and escalation status.
  • Participate in remote peer-review and discrepancy-review activities within established professional and governance arrangements.
  • Analyse screening discrepancies and recurring technical issues to identify opportunities for process improvement.
  • Support the review and maintenance of cytology screening procedures, work instructions, and quality checklists.
  • Assist with the evaluation of screening performance indicators, including workload distribution, review consistency, and documentation quality.
  • Contribute to internal audit preparation and the organisation of evidence relating to cytology screening quality.
  • Collaborate with laboratory personnel to investigate documentation gaps, image quality concerns, and workflow delays.
  • Support the implementation of corrective and preventive actions relating to screening documentation and digital slide review.
  • Participate in remote training sessions and professional development activities relating to cytological morphology, screening procedures, and digital pathology.
  • Maintain accurate records of screening activity, case escalation, technical limitations, and review outcomes.
  • Protect patient confidentiality and comply with applicable data protection, information security, and professional conduct requirements.
  • Monitor relevant developments in cytology screening methods, digital pathology systems, and recognised laboratory quality standards.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Cytotechnology, Biomedical Science, Medical Laboratory Science, Histotechnology, Cellular Pathology, or a related discipline.
  • Relevant postgraduate qualification in Cytopathology, Laboratory Medicine, Biomedical Science, or a related field is an advantage.
  • Significant experience in cytology screening, cytotechnology, cellular pathology, or diagnostic laboratory services.
  • Strong knowledge of cytological specimen preparation, staining methods, cellular morphology, and specimen adequacy assessment.
  • Familiarity with screening principles for gynaecological and non-gynaecological cytology specimens, as applicable to professional training and scope of practice.
  • Ability to recognise potentially significant cellular abnormalities and escalate cases appropriately.
  • Experience reviewing digital cytology images or working with digital pathology platforms is preferred.
  • Understanding of cytology laboratory workflows, specimen tracking, case documentation, and quality assurance procedures.
  • Knowledge of relevant cytology reporting frameworks and laboratory quality requirements.
  • Familiarity with laboratory information systems, digital slide management platforms, and electronic case review tools.
  • Experience participating in internal quality control, peer review, discrepancy analysis, or screening performance monitoring.
  • Understanding of patient confidentiality, secure digital image handling, and healthcare information governance.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to maintain consistent screening documentation.
  • Excellent analytical and organisational skills, including the ability to manage screening workloads and prioritise escalated cases.
  • Clear written communication skills and the ability to collaborate with pathologists, laboratory scientists, and quality professionals.
  • Relevant professional registration, certification, or licensing where required for the applicable cytology screening responsibilities.
  • Ability to work independently and maintain productivity in a fully remote environment with secure access to approved digital systems.
What We Offer
  • A 100% remote working arrangement based in the United Arab Emirates.
  • Opportunities to contribute to cytology screening quality and digital pathology workflows.
  • Collaboration with experienced cytology, pathology, and laboratory quality professionals.
  • Opportunities for continuing professional development in cytology and digital diagnostic technologies.
  • A role focused on technical screening support, quality improvement, and accurate diagnostic documentation.
