THE TEAM & THE JOB

The Enterprise Systems BI Data & Analytics team owns the design, delivery and governance of YouGov's BI reporting and analytics estate, working closely with business stakeholders across the company to turn data into decisions. Following an investment in internal capability, the team is building out its in-house reporting development resource under the Enterprise Systems Senior Manager BI Data & Analytics.

As Senior Data Analyst, you will be an advanced-level professional providing expert Power BI development on complex assignments and giving direction to more junior data analysts. You will work autonomously, determining the methods and approaches used on new assignments, owning development standards for the reporting estate

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING – KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design, develop and deploy advanced Power BI reports and interactive dashboards on complex, high-impact assignments.
  • Determine the development methods and approaches used on new assignments, providing solutions to complex issues in creative and effective ways.
  • Write complex DAX calculations (including time intelligence, context transition and dynamic patterns) to implement sophisticated business logic.
  • Define, own and enforce visual design standards, templates and BI development best practices across the team.
  • Manage Fabric workspaces, security roles and access permissions, implementing row-level and object-level security (RLS/OLS).
  • Establish and maintain report deployment processes, version control and documentation standards so solutions are governed and supportable.
  • Partner with business stakeholders to translate end user requirements into scalable technical solutions.
  • Design self-service BI solutions that enable business users to explore data independently.
  • Provide technical direction and mentorship to junior data analysts, leading design reviews and giving constructive feedback.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW – TECHNICAL SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

  • Advanced Power BI development experience, including expert-level DAX and advanced Power Query (M).
  • Deep understanding of data modelling and star schema design, with in-depth knowledge of the trade-offs between approaches (e.g. DirectQuery vs Import, composite models, aggregation tables).
  • Strong SQL skills for querying underlying data.
  • Experience administering Power BI Service, including workspaces, security (RLS/OLS) and Premium/Fabric capacity management.
  • Experience establishing BI governance, deployment and version control practices (including Azure DevOps).
  • Microsoft Power BI Data Analyst Associate (PL-300) certification, or equivalent, experience with Microsoft Fabric, and exposure to Python/R, Power Apps/Power Automate.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW – BEHAVIOURAL SKILLS & COMPETENCIES

  • Works autonomously, with authority over day-to-day priorities and the judgement to determine methods and approach on new assignments. Work is reviewed on completion against agreed outcomes rather than supervised in progress. (be accountable)
  • Solves complex, non-routine problems by weighing variable factors and adapting established techniques, rather than applying a set procedure. Knows when to escalate and when to decide. (be accountable)
  • Conveys complex technical information persuasively to non-technical audiences, adapting style to the listener and developing recommendations that stakeholders can act on. (communicate clearly)
  • Provides work direction, mentoring and design review to less experienced colleagues without formal line management authority, giving feedback that raises the standard of the team's output. (trust each other)
  • Builds working relationships beyond the immediate team, advising colleagues across functions and locations and negotiating priorities where demand competes. (trust each other)
  • Owns quality and governance standards for their own area, holds others to them, and raises problems early rather than working around them. (be accountable)
  • Keeps pace with a fast-moving platform, forms a view on which new Fabric and Power BI capabilities are worth adopting, and champions them to the team. (be fast)
  • Balances the pull of ad hoc reporting requests against planned delivery, pushing back constructively where a request is better met by a self-service solution. (be fast)
