      The opportunity

Reporting to the Head of Data Science, we are hiring a Senior Data Engineer to support Altus Labs, Altus Group’s hub for innovation in commercial real estate. As our new Senior Data Engineer, you will own data pipeline architecture and platform infrastructure end-to-end, from ingestion through delivery to the Data Scientists, ML Engineers, and platform services that depend on it. You will combine hands-on technical execution with thoughtful architectural decision-making, helping build reliable, scalable data infrastructure that supports analytics and machine learning.

You will work across Data Engineering, Data Science, ML Engineering, and platform teams to establish technical standards, improve data quality, and develop reusable tools and frameworks. Your work will help strengthen how data is built, managed, monitored, and delivered across Altus Labs while supporting the continued evolution of its commercial real estate data capabilities.

This is a full time remote position open to candidates based within Canada or the UK.

      What’s in it for you

Own meaningful technical work from end to end. You will have the opportunity to shape the architecture, reliability, and operational health of data infrastructure that supports analytics and machine learning. Your decisions will influence how data is modeled, orchestrated, monitored, and delivered across the team.

Solve complex data engineering challenges. You will work with distributed systems, cloud data platforms, batch and streaming pipelines, and production-scale data infrastructure. Your work will involve solving challenging technical problems while creating solutions that are reliable, maintainable, and designed to evolve.

Support innovation in commercial real estate. You will build the data foundation that Data Scientists, ML Engineers, and platform services rely on. Your work will help improve data quality, scalability, and accessibility so teams can develop more effective analytics and machine learning solutions.

Grow your influence through expertise. You will have opportunities to contribute to technical design, reusable engineering practices, documentation, code reviews, and mentorship. Your knowledge and judgment will help strengthen the team’s technical capabilities and improve the practice of data engineering.

As our new Senior Data Engineer, you will:

      • Design and own data pipelines. You will design, build, and maintain batch and streaming data pipelines from ingestion through delivery. You will make practical decisions about data modeling, storage, and orchestration while taking ownership of the reliability and operational health of what you build.

      • Build scalable data infrastructure. You will develop and maintain data platform infrastructure using Databricks and cloud environments. You will contribute to platform configuration, access controls, orchestration, and cataloging, helping create a secure and scalable foundation for growing data volumes and evolving use cases.

      • Strengthen data quality and engineering standards. You will implement data quality checks and lineage tracking at ingestion to help identify issues before they affect downstream models, reports, or analytical workflows. You will also create reusable pipeline templates, tools, and documentation that improve consistency across the team.

      • Partner across data and technology teams. You will work closely with Data Scientists, ML Engineers, and platform teams to understand their data requirements and translate them into dependable pipelines and infrastructure. You will communicate technical trade-offs, identify risks, and help ensure downstream teams receive the data they need.

      • Support technical growth. You will contribute to code reviews, technical design discussions, and pairing sessions. You will share knowledge and practical guidance that helps junior engineers build their skills and improves the quality of the team’s work.

      You bring:

      • The data engineering experience. You bring proven experience designing, building, and operating production data pipelines and infrastructure. You understand how to develop reliable systems, troubleshoot production issues, and create solutions that can scale as data volumes and use cases grow.

      • The technical foundation. You have strong programming skills in Python, SQL, and Spark, along with a solid understanding of distributed data processing. You can apply these tools to build, optimize, and maintain pipelines that support analytical and machine learning workloads.

      • The platform expertise. You have practical experience working with Databricks and related technologies such as Unity Catalog, Workflows, and Delta Lake, or equivalent cloud data platforms. You understand platform infrastructure, orchestration, access controls, and data cataloging in a production environment.

      • The engineering practices. You have experience with pipeline orchestration and development tooling such as Databricks Asset Bundles, Airflow, or dbt. You understand the importance of testing, monitoring, documentation, and reusable practices in maintaining reliable data systems.

      • The problem-solving approach. You can independently investigate production issues, make sound architectural decisions, and balance immediate delivery needs with long-term scalability and maintainability. You take data quality, monitoring, and operational reliability seriously.

      • The communication and leadership skills. You communicate clearly with technical and business stakeholders and can explain technical trade-offs in practical terms. You are comfortable contributing to code reviews, pairing with colleagues, and mentoring junior engineers.

      • The domain knowledge. You understand how domain context can inform data modeling and the design of useful analytical solutions. Experience working with finance, credit, commercial real estate, or related data domains would be an asset. A degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field may be considered an asset. Equivalent knowledge gained through education, training, and practical experience is also valuable.
