Senior Individual Contributor | Microsoft Fabric · Azure · Power BI · RAG & LLMs (Claude) | Ewing, NJ – Hybrid The opportunity GS1 is not looking for someone to maintain a few dashboards. It is looking for a hands-on senior engineer to shape how a global standards organisation uses its data and puts AI into production, responsibly. You'll join the Business Intelligence & Data Analytics (BIDA) team and work across three areas: modern data engineering on Microsoft Fabric , business intelligence with Power BI , and AI-enabled data solutions that connect approved enterprise data to large language models, including Claude AI . This role is for you if you want real technical ownership. You would set the engineering standards, advise senior leaders on AI use cases and see your work used across a global network. Through its Global Office and a worldwide network of Member Organisations, GS1 helps retail, healthcare, logistics and technical industries identify, capture and share reliable data. What you'll actually do Design and build scalable data platforms : pipelines, Lakehouse, Data Warehouse and semantic models on Microsoft Fabric and Azure, using reusable design patterns. Integrate data reliably with Fabric Data Pipelines, Azure Data Factory and APIs, and help drive migration and modernisation initiatives. Bring AI into production : build RAG pipelines (data preparation, chunking, embeddings, indexing, retrieval) that connect enterprise data to Claude and other approved LLM platforms, with accurate and traceable results. Prototype AI use cases with senior leaders : weigh business value, architecture, risk and guardrails, then monitor quality, performance and cost once the use cases are live. Deliver actionable BI : build Power BI dashboards, datasets and semantic models, and promote consistent definitions and measures across the organisation. Make quality and governance part of the design : data validation, observability, lineage, role-based access, data classification and responsible AI practices. Own production : CI/CD, automated testing, incident resolution, root-cause analysis, runbooks and recovery procedures. Lead technically : review code and designs, coach team members and explain trade-offs clearly to technical and non-technical audiences across a global organisation. Who we're looking for A bachelor's degree in computer science, data engineering, information systems or a related field, or equivalent professional experience. 5+ years in data engineering, BI or analytics, including real responsibility for production solutions . Strong hands-on experience with Microsoft Fabric , or significant experience with Azure Synapse, Databricks or a comparable cloud analytics platform. Practical experience building or supporting RAG pipelines and working with LLM APIs such as Claude, OpenAI or comparable platforms. A pragmatic, builder's mindset: you care about reliable outcomes, measurable value and good documentation. Sound judgement with sensitive and confidential data. Fluent written and spoken English. Skills that matter Advanced SQL (Azure SQL or equivalent); Python and/or PySpark . Power BI , DAX , dimensional modelling, data warehousing and enterprise semantic models. ETL/ELT with Azure Data Factory, Fabric Data Pipelines or comparable orchestration tools. Embeddings, vector search and vector databases, retrieval patterns, and integration of structured and unstructured data. Git, automated testing, CI/CD and production monitoring. Data security, role-based access control and privacy in cloud environments. Strong plus: Microsoft Fabric certification; Purview, OneLake, Azure DevOps or GitHub; Power BI administration and capacity management; cloud cost optimisation; hands-on use of Claude AI / Claude Code ; AI governance and model evaluation; experience in a global, federated or matrixed organisation.
