SCOPE OF ROLE
As a Senior Cable Systems Engineer, you will support the development and delivery of cable system engineering activities for substation and renewable energy projects. You will be responsible for the design and engineering of HVAC and HVDC cable systems from 11kV up to 132kV, ensuring compliance with applicable standards, DNO requirements, project specifications, budget and schedule.

You will work closely with primary engineering, project teams, clients, DNOs and suppliers to deliver technically compliant and optimised cable system designs.

Key Responsibilities

• Carry out HVAC cable calculations and cable sizing in accordance with DNO requirements and ENA/IEC/BS standards.

• Develop cable route layouts, feasibility drawings, trench sections and cable management systems.

• Prepare detailed cable design calculations, reports and technical documentation.

• Perform cable pulling, cable thrust and cable sizing calculations and support cable/accessory procurement.

• Design and coordinate HV/EHV cable systems, sealing end structures and interfaces with primary engineering.

• Review and optimise cable routing, JB locations and overall cable system design.

• Raise and manage RFIs/TQs and coordinate technical information required at project start-up.

• Review supplier drawings, datasheets and technical submissions.

• Produce and review AutoCAD drawings as required.

• Liaise with internal disciplines, subcontractors, suppliers, clients and DNOs to identify and mitigate technical risks.

• Provide technical input to tender proposals and participate in client/DNO meetings.

• Deliver engineering activities independently in line with agreed project budgets, schedules, standards and regulations.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING

Essential

• 7+ years of relevant experience in cable systems engineering/design, preferably within substations, transmission or renewable energy projects.

• Strong experience in HVAC/HV cable system design from 11kV to 132kV.

• Strong knowledge of cable sizing, cable calculations, cable pulling and thrust calculations.

• Good understanding of HV/EHV cable routing, cable management systems, trench design and cable accessories.

• Experience working with ENA, IEC and BS standards and relevant DNO requirements.

• Experience interfacing cable systems with primary substation design.

• Proficiency in AutoCAD and ability to produce/review technical drawings.

• Experience preparing technical reports, calculations and design documentation.

• Ability to coordinate effectively with multiple engineering disciplines, suppliers, clients and DNOs.

• Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to work independently and deliver within project schedules.

Nice to Have

• Experience in HVDC cable systems.

• Experience with offshore windfarm projects or other renewable energy projects.

• Experience with UK DNO/substation projects and associated technical standards.

• Experience in reviewing supplier technical drawings and datasheets.

• Previous experience contributing to tenders and client-facing technical discussions.
