SCOPE OF ROLE
The Senior Design Engineer (Primary Substation) will be responsible for the end-to-end design and engineering of HV/EHV substations, ensuring compliance with relevant industry standards, client specifications, and project requirements. The role involves preparing and reviewing primary design deliverables, including substation layouts, equipment arrangements, busbar schemes, earthing layouts, and cable routing for projects up to 400kV and above.
The successful candidate will coordinate with multidisciplinary engineering teams, provide technical guidance to junior engineers, support design reviews, and liaise with clients and stakeholders to deliver safe, efficient, and cost-effective substation solutions. The role also requires ensuring design quality, project schedules, and adherence to applicable UK and international engineering standards.
WHAT YOU’LL BRING
Essential
Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline (B.E., B.Tech, or equivalent qualification).
Proven experience in the design and delivery of upto 400kV substations.
Strong expertise in LV system design, ensuring compliance with BS 7671 and relevant industry standards.
Demonstrated experience undertaking earthing system studies and designs across multiple DNO networks and geographical regions.
Proven capability to perform and authorise design reviews and design verification checks in accordance with DNO and client-specific requirements.
Sound understanding of electrical installation principles, with the ability to apply engineering knowledge in practical, real-world project environments.
Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to clearly convey technical design requirements and solutions to clients, project managers, construction teams, and other key stakeholders.
Ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary engineering teams while maintaining high standards of quality, safety, and technical compliance.
Nice to have
Working knowledge of and experience delivering projects across private electricity networks, data centres, solar farms, and battery energy storage systems (BESS).
A self-aware and proactive approach to professional development, with the ability to identify and address gaps in both technical expertise and soft skills.
A willingness to mentor, support, and share knowledge with junior engineers, contributing to the development of a high-performing engineering team.

You enjoy working closely with the Lead Engineer to develop designs from concept stage through detailed design, construction support, and final as-built delivery.
You possess strong knowledge of single-line diagrams, primary design calculations, substation layouts, equipment sizing, busbar arrangements, cross-sections, and cable trench designs, with experience in LV and HV electrical infrastructure projects.
You can confidently present technical solutions and design proposals during client meetings, design reviews, and stakeholder workshops.
You have experience developing technical specifications and documentation to support the procurement of primary plant and equipment.
You have an understanding of cable design principles up to 400kV, including cable routing, cable length estimation, and termination requirements.
You collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams and proactively resolve technical challenges across engineering, commercial, and construction functions.
You consistently deliver high-quality, compliant engineering designs that meet customer requirements, project objectives, and applicable industry standards.
You have a strong understanding of ENA, DNO, IDNO G81 standards, Engineering Recommendations, BS and IEC standards, and can support and mentor others in their application.
You actively promote value engineering, innovative thinking, and continuous improvement to enhance project outcomes and operational efficiency.
You are committed to maintaining and improving design quality standards across all projects.
You ensure all engineering deliverables align with NERS accreditation requirements and relevant regulatory obligations.
